Job Description

DIY Media Group (d/b/a "BookBaby") has an immediate need for a Book Designer to join our growing team. We’re looking for a talented Book Designer to bring stories to life in a fast-paced, creative environment. In this role, you will design eye-catching covers that stand out in a crowded market, while also transforming raw manuscripts into beautifully formatted interiors that elevate readability and enhance the reader experience. This is a dynamic, detail-driven position where creative thinking and strong execution directly impact how a book resonates with readers. This is a remote position with our headquarters located in Pennsauken, NJ, just outside of Philadelphia.

Responsibilities/Tasks

  • Conceptualize and translate the author's vision into compelling cover and interior book designs that align with their goals and expectations.
  • Create custom, innovative book cover designs from concept through final production on a daily basis.
  • Transform text-heavy manuscripts into professionally formatted books while maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the manuscript content.
  • Transition seamlessly between a vast variety of genres day to day (fiction, non-fiction, cookbooks, etc), demonstrating flexibility in adapting to individual project styles and creative expectations.
  • Maintain strong organizational and prioritization skills to effectively manage multiple projects and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Prepare, review, and verify all files for accuracy and compliance with production specifications.
Requirements:


Educational Requirements:

Art/design degree or equivalent work experience.


Pre-requisites

  • Expert-level knowledge of publishing and design programs, including Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, etc.
  • Exceptional attention to detail. Must be able to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve formatting issues within large, complex manuscript files.
  • Receptive to constructive feedback from both leadership and authors.
  • Self-motivated, able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrates accountability, professionalism, and discipline in managing daily responsibilities.
  • Two or more years in the design and/or publishing industry preferred.
  • Knowledge of PitStop, HTML, CSS, and Premiere Pro a plus.

Special Skills Required

  • Thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume production design environment with quick turnaround times.
  • Must have good communication, language, and verbal skills.
  • Math skills required. Will need to make basic math calculations.
  • Advanced non-programming computer skills required, including proficiency with Zoom.
  • Ability to multitask; balancing numerous projects and deadlines simultaneously, 20+ per month.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to perform work at a computer for 90% of the day.
  • Requires fine manipulation of a computer mouse and keyboard.
