Internship Bioinformatics Software Engineer information

What does an internship bioinformatics software engineer do?

An Internship Bioinformatics Software Engineer assists in developing and maintaining software tools used to analyze biological data, such as DNA sequences or protein structures. They often work under the supervision of senior engineers and scientists to write code, troubleshoot issues, and implement algorithms for biological research. Interns may also help process large datasets, visualize results, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. This role provides hands-on experience in both software development and the application of computational methods to biological problems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship bioinformatics software engineer?

To thrive as an Internship Bioinformatics Software Engineer, you need a foundational understanding of programming (often in Python, R, or Java), basic knowledge of molecular biology or genomics, and current pursuit of a degree in bioinformatics, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools (such as BLAST, Bioconductor, or Galaxy), version control systems like Git, and experience analyzing biological datasets are typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate and learn in multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities ensure interns can contribute to meaningful research, adapt quickly to new technologies, and facilitate teamwork in complex scientific environments.

What types of projects do internship bioinformatics software engineers typically work on?

Internship Bioinformatics Software Engineers often work on projects involving the development and optimization of software tools for analyzing large biological datasets, such as genomic sequences or protein structures. These projects frequently require collaboration with biologists and data scientists, offering valuable exposure to interdisciplinary teamwork. Interns may be tasked with writing code, testing algorithms, or visualizing data, all of which build practical skills in both software engineering and bioinformatics. This hands-on experience not only enhances technical proficiency but also helps interns better understand real-world applications in life sciences, setting a strong foundation for future career growth.

What is the difference between Internship Bioinformatics Software Engineer vs Bioinformatics Data Analyst?

AspectInternship Bioinformatics Software Engineer
Required CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or related fields
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, biotech companies, or academic institutions
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in biotech, pharmaceutical, and research organizations for software development
Common Search & ComparisonCompared for entry-level software development roles in bioinformatics

While both roles involve working with biological data, an Internship Bioinformatics Software Engineer focuses on developing software tools and algorithms, often requiring programming skills and software development knowledge. A Bioinformatics Data Analyst primarily analyzes biological data, using statistical and data visualization tools. The internship provides hands-on experience in coding and software creation, whereas a data analyst role emphasizes data interpretation and reporting.

About Shermco Canada

Shermco Canada is a trusted provider of electrical testing, engineering, commissioning, maintenance, and power system services. We support utility, industrial, commercial, and infrastructure customers by helping improve the safety, reliability, and performance of critical electrical systems.

We are currently seeking an Electrical Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join our team in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This is a strong opportunity for an early-career electrical engineering graduate or EIT who is interested in power systems, electrical field services, testing, commissioning, and practical engineering development.

Position Summary

The Electrical Engineer-in-Training will support engineering and field-service projects involving electrical power distribution systems, substations, switchgear, transformers, protective relays, grounding systems, electrical studies, and commissioning activities.

Working under the supervision of licensed Professional Engineers and experienced technical staff, the successful candidate will assist with technical analysis, field data collection, testing support, project documentation, reporting, and customer deliverables.

This role is based in Winnipeg, Manitoba and requires approximately 50% travel to customer sites and project locations. Travel may include day trips, overnight stays, extended field assignments, and occasional work outside Manitoba based on project and business needs.

Responsibilities
  • Support electrical engineering and field-service projects involving power distribution, substations, industrial facilities, utilities, and commercial electrical systems.
  • Assist with electrical studies, calculations, technical reviews, equipment assessments, field inspections, commissioning support, and testing activities under appropriate supervision.
  • Collect, review, and organize field data, test results, equipment information, drawings, photos, and customer documentation.
  • Support the preparation of engineering reports, service reports, test documentation, technical summaries, and customer deliverables.
  • Review single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment drawings, relay settings, and technical specifications.
  • Participate in testing and commissioning support for transformers, switchgear, breakers, relays, cables, metering systems, grounding systems, and related electrical infrastructure.
  • Work with Shermco engineers, technologists, technicians, project managers, customers, and vendors to support safe and effective project execution.
  • Follow Shermco, customer, site-specific, provincial, and federal safety requirements, including participation in safety meetings, job hazard assessments, and field briefings.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited or recognized engineering program.
  • Registered as an Engineer-in-Training with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba, or eligible and willing to register as an EIT in Manitoba.
  • Interest in power systems, electrical distribution, substations, protection and control, electrical testing, commissioning, or field engineering.
  • Ability to work under the supervision of licensed Professional Engineers and within applicable engineering practice requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documents.
  • Valid driver's licence with the ability to travel approximately 50%, including overnight travel and work away from home when required.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams. Exposure to AutoCAD, Bluebeam, electrical study software, or test reporting systems is considered an asset.
  • Previous co-op, internship, utility, industrial, consulting, construction, electrical services, or field experience is considered an asset.
