Simulation Software Engineer Internship information

What does a simulation software engineer intern do?

A Simulation Software Engineer Intern assists in developing and testing software models that simulate real-world processes or systems. They typically work with experienced engineers to write code, debug simulations, and analyze results to ensure accuracy and efficiency. Interns may use tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, or Python, and contribute to projects in fields like automotive, aerospace, or robotics. The role helps interns gain hands-on experience in software engineering and simulation technologies, preparing them for future careers in the industry.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a simulation software engineer internship?

As a Simulation Software Engineer Intern, you will typically contribute to developing, testing, and refining simulation models used for validating real-world systems or products. Your daily tasks may include coding simulation algorithms, analyzing performance data, debugging issues, and collaborating with engineers from other disciplines such as hardware, robotics, or product design. Interns often work closely with mentors, attend team meetings, and may have opportunities to present findings or improvements. This role provides hands-on experience with industry-standard simulation tools and fosters valuable teamwork and technical skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a simulation software engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Simulation Software Engineer Intern, you need a strong foundation in programming languages (such as C++, Python, or MATLAB), mathematical modeling, and computer science principles, typically supported by ongoing or completed coursework in engineering or related fields. Familiarity with simulation tools (like Simulink or Modelica), version control systems (such as Git), and possibly exposure to CAD or physics engines is often required. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are important soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for accurately developing, testing, and refining simulation models within collaborative engineering environments.

What is the difference between Simulation Software Engineer Internship vs Simulation Software Engineer?

AspectSimulation Software Engineer InternshipSimulation Software Engineer
Required CredentialsCurrently pursuing or recently completed a relevant degree (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering)Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related field, with some roles preferring experience or certifications
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, often in corporate R&D or product teams, with mentorshipFull-time professional role in engineering teams, often in R&D or product development
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by tech companies, automotive, aerospace, and simulation firms for training and developmentEmployed in similar industries, focusing on developing and maintaining simulation software products

The main difference is that a Simulation Software Engineer Internship is a temporary, learning-focused position for students or recent graduates, while a Simulation Software Engineer is a full-time professional role requiring more experience and responsibility in developing simulation software.

Job description

About Us:
AMETEK RTDS Technologies is a leading provider of real-time power simulation systems, catering to utilities, research institutions, and educational organizations. Our cutting-edge solutions enable the development and testing of the electric power grid and renewable energy applications. If you're excited about driving innovation and enhancing the reliability of our energy infrastructure, this is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a dynamic and growing field!

Job Summary:

The Software team at RTDS is responsible for the development of the RSCADFX software suite that customers across the globe use for designing, running, and analyzing their real-time simulation studies. The suite spans several technology stacks, so there is always something new to learn.

In this role you will focus on RSCADFX, the graphical application our customers use to build, run, and analyze simulations, and on the C backend that powers the simulation. You will work as part of a small, collaborative team on diverse work that ranges from GUI design and usability to performance-critical, modular backend code. It is a role for a strong, detail-oriented programmer who is equally comfortable in an application front end and in low-level systems code, and who takes ownership of what they build.

This is a challenging and rewarding role that reaches into the core of our technology, including the compiler and linker that turn models into real-time simulation code. We are looking for a developer who understands the compilation and linking process end to end and is very comfortable working with DLLs and native Windows applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain RSCAD FX, ensuring a responsive, intuitive user experience for customers running simulation studies.
  • Develop and maintain performance-critical backend software in C, including modular, dynamically loaded simulation components with clean, stable interfaces.
  • Contribute to the compiler and linker technology at the core of the platform, working with native code, DLLs, and the Windows environment.
  • Develop scripting, automation, and tooling in Python to support simulation workflows, testing, and build processes.
  • Write, modify, integrate, and test software to a high standard, while adhering to coding standards and development processes.
  • Profile, debug, and optimize compute-heavy code paths; analyze and enhance the performance and reliability of existing RTDS software.
  • Provide hands-on troubleshooting, debugging, and fixes during development and after release.
  • Prepare clear documentation on the operation and maintenance of software.
  • Work closely with other teams, especially Hardware and Support, to define functional and user-interface requirements and resolve customer issues.
  • Investigate, evaluate, and recommend technologies for new functionality and products.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 5 years of full-time industry experience as a software developer.
  • Strong programming ability in Java, with hands-on experience building rich desktop GUI applications in JavaFX.
  • Solid working knowledge of C for backend and performance-sensitive code.
  • Experience with Python for scripting, automation, and tooling.
  • A solid understanding of the compilation and linking process, including how source code becomes executable code.
  • Strong familiarity with DLLs/shared libraries and developing native Windows applications.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, design patterns, and testing.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to use AI tools to improve productivity, decision-making, work quality, and to reduce costs. The successful candidate must be able to identify appropriate AI use cases and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs.
  • Familiarity with development and debugging tools, including version control (Git), issue trackers, project-management tools, and CI/CD.
  • Exceptional attention to detail. This work rewards developers who chase down edge cases and leave no loose ends.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills, with the patience to get things exactly right.
  • Technical curiosity, a drive to learn, and good interpersonal skills.

Deadline to apply: September 4, 2026

What's in it for you?

  • Competitive compensation and paid time off
  • Great benefits package that includes health, vision, dental, and fitness reimbursement program
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Group Retirement Savings with Company Match
  • Costco membership
  • Every day free parking, and free parking for Princess Auto Stadium events
  • Maternity and parental wage supplement and more!
