What does an internship Slack software engineer do?

An Internship Slack Software Engineer works as a software engineering intern at Slack, contributing to the development and maintenance of Slack’s messaging platform and related features. Interns typically collaborate with experienced engineers, write and test code, debug issues, and participate in team meetings. The internship provides hands-on experience with modern technologies, exposure to best engineering practices, and opportunities to learn about Slack’s product development processes. Interns may also work on projects that improve the Slack user experience or internal tools. The role is designed to help students gain practical skills and prepare for a full-time software engineering career.

What types of projects does an internship Slack software engineer typically work on, and how are their contributions integrated with the broader engineering team?

Internship Slack Software Engineers often participate in real-world projects such as developing new features, fixing bugs, or improving internal tools that directly impact Slack’s product and user experience. Interns are paired with mentors and collaborate closely with experienced engineers through code reviews, stand-ups, and team meetings. Their work is regularly reviewed, and meaningful contributions are merged into production, ensuring interns gain hands-on experience while adding value to the team. This collaborative environment helps interns quickly learn industry best practices and build a professional network within the company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship Slack software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Slack Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, proficiency in programming languages like JavaScript or Python, and progress toward a relevant degree such as Computer Science. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), cloud platforms, and collaboration tools commonly used in software development is expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a willingness to learn help interns stand out in this collaborative environment. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering high-quality code, efficiently contributing to team projects, and adapting to Slack’s fast-paced tech culture.

We are currently seeking an Electrical Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join our team in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This is a strong opportunity for an early-career electrical engineering graduate or EIT who is interested in power systems, electrical field services, testing, commissioning, and practical engineering development.

Position Summary

The Electrical Engineer-in-Training will support engineering and field-service projects involving electrical power distribution systems, substations, switchgear, transformers, protective relays, grounding systems, electrical studies, and commissioning activities.

Working under the supervision of licensed Professional Engineers and experienced technical staff, the successful candidate will assist with technical analysis, field data collection, testing support, project documentation, reporting, and customer deliverables.

This role is based in Winnipeg, Manitoba and requires approximately 50% travel to customer sites and project locations. Travel may include day trips, overnight stays, extended field assignments, and occasional work outside Manitoba based on project and business needs.

Responsibilities
  • Support electrical engineering and field-service projects involving power distribution, substations, industrial facilities, utilities, and commercial electrical systems.
  • Assist with electrical studies, calculations, technical reviews, equipment assessments, field inspections, commissioning support, and testing activities under appropriate supervision.
  • Collect, review, and organize field data, test results, equipment information, drawings, photos, and customer documentation.
  • Support the preparation of engineering reports, service reports, test documentation, technical summaries, and customer deliverables.
  • Review single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment drawings, relay settings, and technical specifications.
  • Participate in testing and commissioning support for transformers, switchgear, breakers, relays, cables, metering systems, grounding systems, and related electrical infrastructure.
  • Work with Shermco engineers, technologists, technicians, project managers, customers, and vendors to support safe and effective project execution.
  • Follow Shermco, customer, site-specific, provincial, and federal safety requirements, including participation in safety meetings, job hazard assessments, and field briefings.

  • Ability to work under the supervision of licensed Professional Engineers and within applicable engineering practice requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documents.
  • Valid driver's licence with the ability to travel approximately 50%, including overnight travel and work away from home when required.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams. Exposure to AutoCAD, Bluebeam, electrical study software, or test reporting systems is considered an asset.
  • Previous co-op, internship, utility, industrial, consulting, construction, electrical services, or field experience is considered an asset.

Skills and Competencies

  • Safety-focused approach to all work.
  • Strong attention to detail when reviewing drawings, test data, reports, and technical documents.
  • Practical problem-solving skills and curiosity about how electrical systems operate in the field.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with internal teams, customers, and site personnel.
  • Willingness to learn from engineers, technologists, technicians, and field-service teams.
  • Comfortable working in both office and field environments.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage documentation and project details.
