Job description

RK&K is hiring a Traffic Engineering Intern to join our Traffic team in Richmond for the summer of 2027.As an intern in our Traffic Department at RK&K, you will receive on-the-job training, work alongside, and collaborate closely with one of the largest, most talented groups of traffic engineers and transportation professionals in the industry.

This internship is forCivil EngineeringStudents in the Transportation discipline. In this role, interns will gain insight into various aspects of traffic engineering includingdesign, analysis, and safety. Traffic Engineering Interns will be exposed to various challenges, projects,and technologiesrelated to traffic operations, safety, anddesign, and will complete tasks both in the office and in the field as needed.

Basic Functions:

  • Provide traffic engineering support for projects ranging from small scale studies and design for isolated intersections to complex solutions forComplete Streets corridorsand major highway systems.
  • Assistwith the preparation ofdesign plans for traffic control devices including traffic signals, signing and pavement markings, temporary traffic control/work zones, lighting, design of bicycle and pedestrian facilities, toll systems, traffic calming,and Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS).
  • Perform field investigations,collectand compile traffic data, evaluate traffic safety and operational conditionsfor all road users,anddevelop recommendationsfor improvements.

RequiredSkills andQualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a degree inCivil Engineeringwith an interest intransportation or traffic engineering
  • Proficient knowledge ofMicrosoft Office products(Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Self-motivated with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Excellent written andoral communicationskills
  • Valid driver's license

PreferredSkills andQualifications

  • Classwork in traffic engineering
  • Participation in professional societies (ASCE, ITE)
  • Applicable prior internship experience
  • Working knowledge ofMicroStation/AutoCAD,GIS, Synchro,Vissim, HCS
  • Exposure to trafficengineering references (MUTCD, Highway Capacity Manual, AASHTO guidelines)
