How much do internship barback jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 20, 2026, the average hourly pay for internship barback in the United States is $13.37, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $9.62 and $15.62 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How to get experience as a barback?

To gain experience as a barback, start by volunteering or working in entry-level positions at bars or restaurants to learn the basics of bar operations and customer service. Developing skills in alcohol safety, cleaning, and restocking, along with a good work ethic, can help you advance in this role. Some employers may also value certifications like responsible beverage service training.

What are some common challenges faced by internship barbacks, and how can I prepare for them?

Internship barbacks often face challenges such as working in fast-paced environments, managing multiple tasks simultaneously, and maintaining strong communication with bartenders and other staff. To prepare, it's helpful to develop good time management skills, learn basic bar setups, and stay organized under pressure. Being proactive, attentive to detail, and willing to quickly adapt to changing needs will help you succeed and make a positive impression during your internship.

Can you make $1000 a night bartending?

As an internship barback, earning $1000 a night is unlikely, as barbacks typically earn hourly wages or tips that are lower than bartenders. Bartenders with experience, high-volume venues, and strong tipping skills can sometimes reach that level, but it is uncommon for entry-level or internship roles. Achieving such earnings generally requires advanced skills, a good location, and a well-established customer base.

What is the difference between Internship Barback vs Barback?

AspectInternship BarbackBarback
CredentialsNone required, training providedNone required, experience preferred
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, training-focused, temporaryFast-paced, ongoing, hospitality venues
Employer & Industry UsageHotels, restaurants, bars during internshipsBars, nightclubs, restaurants

The Internship Barback is a temporary, training-focused role for individuals gaining experience in the hospitality industry, often during internships. In contrast, a Barback is a regular staff member responsible for supporting bartenders in busy venues. While both roles involve assisting with supplies and maintaining the bar area, the internship is more educational, whereas the barback position is a permanent or ongoing job.

What are internship barbacks?

Internship barbacks are entry-level hospitality workers who assist bartenders in busy bars or restaurants while also gaining practical experience as part of an internship program. Their main duties typically include restocking supplies, cleaning glasses and bar surfaces, and supporting bartenders with customer service tasks. This role helps interns develop foundational skills in bar operations and customer service, making it a common starting point for those interested in a bartending or hospitality career. Interns may also learn about beverage preparation, inventory management, and teamwork in a fast-paced environment.

Can I be a barback with no experience?

Yes, many bars hire entry-level barbacks with no prior experience, as the role often involves on-the-job training. Basic skills such as good communication, ability to work quickly, and a willingness to learn are important, and some establishments may require a food handler's permit or similar certification. Experience can be gained on the job, and most employers provide training for specific tasks like restocking supplies and maintaining cleanliness.

Do barbacks get paid well?

Barbacks typically earn an hourly wage that is at or slightly above minimum wage, often supplemented by tips from bartenders and customers. Their total earnings can vary based on location, establishment, and shift hours, but generally, they do not receive high salaries compared to other hospitality roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Barback, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Barback, you need strong organizational skills, basic knowledge of bar operations, and the ability to handle physical tasks, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with POS systems, bar inventory tools, and safe handling procedures is typically required. Strong teamwork, communication skills, and a positive attitude help you stand out in this fast-paced environment. These abilities ensure efficient support for bartenders, smooth bar operations, and a positive customer experience.
