Job description

As part of the AWS Applied AI Solutions organization, we have a vision to provide business applications, leveraging Amazon's unique experience and expertise, that are used by millions of companies worldwide to manage day-to-day operations. We will accomplish this by accelerating our customers' businesses through delivery of intuitive and differentiated technology solutions that solve enduring business challenges. We blend vision with curiosity and Amazon's real-world experience to build opinionated, turnkey solutions.

Where customers prefer to buy over build, we become their trusted partner with solutions that are no-brainers to buy and easy to use.
Amazon Connect is an AI-powered customer experience solution that enables superior outcomes at a lower cost. Since its 2017 public launch, Amazon Connect has become an AI leader, transforming how organizations of all types interact with their customers.
We have a rapidly growing customer base and an exciting charter in front of us that includes solving highly complex engineering and algorithmic problems. We are looking for passionate and talented Software Development Engineers to join us to innovate on this new service that addresses customer needs to build modern contact centers in the cloud

The position represents a rare opportunity to be a part of a fast-growing business soon after launch, and help shape the technology and product as we grow. You will be playing a crucial role in developing the next generation contact center, and get the opportunity to design and deliver scalable, resilient systems while maintaining a constant customer focus.
As a developer on our team, you'll own code end-to-end from design to development, and work closely with senior technical leaders within the team and across AWS. You'll have a sound understanding of computer science fundamentals and practical industry experience, working across the stack with technology involving modern web, SOA, NoSQL databases, AI, ML, Big Data and more.
We build backend services for Amazon Connect, Amazon's cloud contact center platform used by thousands of organizations worldwide

Our customers range from small businesses to some of the largest enterprises on the planet, and the tools we build are used by contact center agents and supervisors every day.
Our team works across multiple areas of the Connect platform, owning services end-to-end from design through operations. We're a small, close-knit engineering team based in Seattle that moves fast, ships often, and takes pride in building systems that are reliable and simple to operate.
We actively use AI to accelerate our work. Whether it's writing code, exploring designs, or automating operational tasks, we integrate AI tools into our daily workflows and encourage experimentation with new approaches.
The culture here is collaborative and low-ego

We debate technical tradeoffs openly, help each other grow, and give engineers the autonomy to own meaningful problems from day one. You'll work alongside experienced engineers who care about craft and who are excited to build tools that make a real difference for contact center teams around the world.
Key job responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain highly available, scalable backend services that power Amazon Connect's customer-facing features
- Own the full software development lifecycle for assigned projects, from technical design through deployment and operational excellence
- Write clean, testable, production-quality code (primarily Java) and conduct rigorous code reviews for peers
- Collaborate with product managers, UX designers, and partner teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions
- Identify and resolve complex technical problems across distributed systems, including performance optimization, fault tolerance, and data consistency
- Mentor junior engineers (L4s and interns) through code reviews, design discussions, and pair programming
- Participate in on-call rotations and operational reviews, driving improvements to reduce operational burden
- Contribute to architectural decisions and technical roadmap planning for the team's services
- Write and maintain design documents, runbooks, and operational documentation
A day in the life
You'll spend your mornings reviewing pull requests and checking service health dashboards. Our team builds the backend systems that power how contact center agents manage customer cases at scale.
Most of your day involves writing code, often with AI coding assistants to accelerate development

You'll design APIs, build features, and solve distributed systems problems in Java and TypeScript, deploying to AWS. When you're not coding, you'll be in design discussions with product managers and frontend engineers, figuring out how to break big customer problems into shippable solutions.
You'll also mentor junior engineers, contribute to architectural decisions, and take turns on-call (about one week every 6-8 weeks). The customers you're building for are enterprise contact centers, some of the largest in the world, and the agents who use these tools every day feel the impact of what you ship.
