Internship Autism School information

What is an internship at an autism school?

Internship positions at an autism school involve working under the supervision of experienced educators and therapists to support children on the autism spectrum. Interns assist with classroom activities, individual and group therapies, and help implement individualized education plans (IEPs). These internships provide hands-on experience in special education, behavioral interventions, and communication strategies for autistic students. The goal is to offer practical training for those interested in careers in special education, psychology, or related fields, while also supporting the needs of the school and its students.

What do interns do at an autism school?

As an intern at an autism school, you can expect to support classroom teachers and therapists with daily activities such as assisting students with academic work, helping implement individualized education plans (IEPs), and participating in behavioral interventions. Interns often help facilitate communication and social skills activities, supervise students during recreational periods, and contribute to data collection and progress monitoring. You'll work closely with special education professionals, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists, gaining hands-on experience in a collaborative, supportive environment.

What skills and qualifications are needed for an internship at an autism school?

To thrive as an intern at an autism school, you need foundational knowledge in special education, child development, or psychology, often supported by ongoing studies or relevant coursework. Familiarity with communication aids, applied behavior analysis (ABA) tools, and individualized education program (IEP) software is common. Patience, empathy, and strong interpersonal skills help interns build trust and effectively support students with autism. These skills are crucial for creating a supportive learning environment and promoting positive outcomes for students with diverse needs.
