What are Internship AMFTs?

Internship AMFTs are Associate Marriage and Family Therapist interns who are gaining supervised clinical experience as part of their licensure requirements. They typically hold a master's degree in marriage and family therapy or a related field and work under the supervision of a licensed therapist. Their role involves providing counseling and therapy services to individuals, couples, and families while developing their skills and fulfilling hours required for full licensure. Internship AMFTs are an important part of the mental health field, often working in various settings such as private practices, community agencies, and hospitals.

What types of projects or responsibilities can I expect during an Internship as an AMFT (Associate Marriage and Family Therapist)?

As an AMFT intern, you'll typically engage in a variety of clinical tasks under the supervision of a licensed therapist. Responsibilities often include conducting client intake assessments, co-facilitating therapy sessions, documenting progress notes, and attending team case consultations. Interns also participate in ongoing training and may work with diverse populations, gaining exposure to different therapeutic modalities. Collaboration with supervisors and interdisciplinary teams is common, providing valuable feedback and learning opportunities throughout your internship.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AMFT (Associate Marriage and Family Therapist) intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AMFT intern, you need a master's degree in marriage and family therapy or a related field and registration as an AMFT with your state's licensing board. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, clinical documentation tools, and evidence-based therapeutic modalities is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to receive and integrate supervision feedback set outstanding interns apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for providing effective client care, meeting licensure requirements, and growing professionally within the mental health field.

Job description

In Southern California, Seneca provides in-depth fieldwork placement and training opportunities for MSW, MFT, and PCC interns.
Graduate Fieldwork Placements follow a standard school year schedule beginning in the fall and ending in the spring/summer. Internships require a minimum commitment of 16 hours per week, and certain placements may require 20-24 hours per week or be restricted to final-year students. Exact schedules are decided on with the supervising clinician according to the students' availability and the program's needs. Due to the sensitive needs of the kids and families we serve, we ask that students assist in providing a healthy transition into and out of our kids and families lives.
Students are provided with the following opportunities:
  • Two week New Employee Orientation (Monday-Friday 9am-5:30pm) is synchronous and mandatory.
  • An intensive orientation to Seneca's population served, values, philosophy, and practice at the beginning of their fieldwork placement.
  • An opportunity to conduct hands-on fieldwork.
  • Training and supervision focused on the Seneca treatment model.
  • Multiple and varying training opportunities presented on a wide range of topics applicable to working with children and their families.
  • Weekly individual supervision provided by a Seneca Clinician with an appropriate degree or license.
  • Weekly group supervision when applicable to the student's fieldwork agreement.
  • Be part of an agency dedicated to helping provide permanent families to allow the children to thrive.
  • Internship stipend (Receipts for educational expenses are required for the full amount of your stipend.)
  • Clearance of TB test, fingerprints, and any other mandatory State/Federal licensing or certification requirements.

Who should apply?
The training settings we offer are most appropriate for advanced students who already have some exposure to clinical populations and direct work with clients. You must be currently enrolled in a clinical graduate program to qualify to apply. Please note: Fieldwork placements do not automatically lead to employment at Seneca.
To Apply: You will need to complete the Fieldwork Matching Form and attach it to your online application. If applicable, please also upload your University Practicum/Internship/Fieldwork Manual to your UKG profile. To begin your online application, click the "Apply Now" button on this page. To learn more about our internships, please visit our Internship Informational page.
Note for Post Graduate Clinical Interns:
As a post graduate MSW (ASW), MFT (AMFT), or PCC (APCC), you may qualify for any of the Clinician/Therapist positions at Seneca. As an employee, Seneca will assist you in gaining your hours, trainings, as well as supervision and support, as you move towards licensure.
