What is an internship agricultural pilot?

An Internship Agricultural Pilot is a trainee position where individuals learn the skills and responsibilities of an agricultural pilot, also known as a crop duster. These interns assist with and observe the aerial application of fertilizers, pesticides, and other substances over farmland, typically under the supervision of experienced pilots. The internship provides hands-on experience in flight operations, safety procedures, aircraft maintenance, and agricultural practices. This role is a stepping stone toward becoming a licensed agricultural pilot.

What tasks and responsibilities can I expect during an internship as an agricultural pilot?

As an intern agricultural pilot, you can expect to assist with aerial application of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides over farmland, under the supervision of experienced pilots. Your daily responsibilities may include pre-flight inspections, learning flight planning and safety procedures, maintaining application equipment, and recording application data. You may also participate in ground support tasks such as loading chemicals and refueling aircraft. This hands-on experience helps you understand the operational flow of agricultural aviation and prepares you for future pilot-in-command roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship agricultural pilot?

To thrive as an Internship Agricultural Pilot, you generally need a foundational understanding of aviation principles, basic agricultural knowledge, and at minimum a student or private pilot license. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, aerial application equipment, and adherence to FAA regulations are typically required, while additional certifications in aerial application may be advantageous. Attention to detail, strong situational awareness, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure safe, precise crop treatment, regulatory compliance, and efficient coordination with ground crews during agricultural operations.
