Job description

The successful candidate will join the Resource Integration Office (RIO) team to support the Center Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering Contract (CMOE) located at NASA's Langley Research Center (LaRC). This position reports directly to the RIO Director.

All work will be performed with a high standard of quality and professionalism. All safety policies and procedures must be followed.

Responsibilities:

The Safety Professional will be required to function well within a team of safety professionals of various disciplines regarding all aspects of work performed under the CMOE contract. The person is required to evaluate and provide direction and institute control and remedial measures for hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions, equipment, and behaviors at field job sites in the areas of occupational safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental compliance; coordinate with other safety team members, NASA personnel, and maintenance/engineering/facility personnel to ensure CMOE contractual obligations are met safely and with good quality. Various written documents are prepared such as records of job site visits and safety observations.

The Safety Professional will ensure expertise for the workforce in the following areas:

  • General and occupational safety including such topics as pre-task planning, PPE, confined space, and fall protection
  • Have a good working knowledge of both 1910 and 1926 OSHA standards.
  • Inspection and evaluation of workplace environments, equipment, and practices to ensure compliance with company, OSHA, and NASA regulations and standards
  • Safety incident investigations
  • Management and use of safety equipment (e.g., fall protection, respirators, gas monitors)
  • Hazardous chemicals
  • Writing, maintaining, understanding, evaluating, and updating safety and emergency response plans
  • Develop and deliver training to the workforce on those topics relevant to and required by their job
  • Investigate and respond to safety concerns, maintaining a record of work performed
  • Be a member of the Hazardous Response (HAZWOPER) team
  • Representing CMOE Safety to NASA and CMOE employees on relevant safety and environmental committees
  • Provide weekly reports and highlights in presentation form to senior staff and the customer

Qualifications:

US Citizenship required. Two (2) years of college preferred, with courses in Occupational Safety or associated disciplines, and four (4) years of related experience. Additional relevant education may be substituted for a portion of the experience.

Demonstrated leadership ability and good communication skills required.

Position requires comprehensive knowledge of programs gained through long and varied work experience in field of specialty.

  • Current U.S. Driver's License (Read ID required)
  • Knowledge of MAXIMO or other (Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)), research ability using the Internet, manufacturer and other sources are desired.
  • Ability to develop and manipulate MS Excel spreadsheets or equivalent. Experience with MS Project preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working with or managing contractors or maintenance personnel on an active job site.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate both orally and written with effective use of visual aids. Should be able to use computing technology for problem analysis and solutions.

Essential Functions:

Work Environment

Office Environment. (25%)
Test/Industrial Environment (75%) - May be exposed to areas of high noise levels, chemicals and industrial facilities. Will be required to walk construction sites. Travel between facilities and test sites across the 788-acre site is required.

Physical Requirements

Must have sufficient mobility to enter confined spaces, crawl into or onto various assemblies while maintaining a clear vision of safety is required. (10%) Potential exposure to high noise levels, hazardous chemicals. Appropriate PPE and training will be provided for all conditions. Must be able to walk, stand, bend, twist and sit for extended periods as well as climb, crawl, and lift up to 35 lbs. (10%) Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.(100%)

  • Employees will exercise diligence when developing a Safe Plan of Action (SPA) for each task performed. Your SPA is a Company provided tool to be used for the prevention of incidents, accidents, and injuries; as such, it is the most important tool that you are required to use.

Compensation Details:

$70,000.00
