Academic Senior Advisor - International Student Services **POSITION DETAILS** Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia's degree-seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students. Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S. community colleges in economic mobility - moving low-income students into the middle class and beyond - in studies by Stanford University (2017) and the Brookings Institution (2020). Reporting to the Director of International Student Services, the Senior Academic Advisor - International Student Services responsibilities include, but are not limited to: + Provide comprehensive academic advising and holistic support to F-1 international students to promote academic success, retention, persistence, and timely degree completion; + Advise students on academic requirements, degree planning, major selection, transfer pathways, career exploration, and the relationship between academic and professional goals; + Interpret and communicate institutional policies, academic regulations, immigration-related requirements, and college procedures affecting international students; + Monitor student progress using DegreeWorks, CUNYfirst, EAB Navigate, and other student success technologies to proactively identify and assist students experiencing academic or personal challenges; + Develop individualized success plans and make referrals to campus resources, including tutoring, accessibility, career services, and wellness programs, among others; + Assist with orientations, workshops, outreach campaigns, and educational programming focused on student success, academic planning, and F-1 compliance; + Collaborate with faculty, academic departments, Enrollment Management, Student Affairs, and other campus partners to ensure coordinated support for international students; + Serve on college committees, task forces, and advising initiatives; contribute to the development and implementation of advising policies, procedures, and best practices; + Train, mentor, and supervise peer advisors, student employees, and/or college assistants assigned to the department; + Provide guidance and tailored support while engaging a cohort of newly admitted students throughout their onboarding process and completion of required tasks; **QUALIFICATIONS** Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required. **OTHER QUALIFICATIONS** + One year directly related to providing college-level advising. + Master's degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g., education, counseling, social and behavioral sciences). + Understanding of the needs and challenges facing international students from diverse backgrounds. + Experience advising students in special programs and/or with a cohort model. + Experience developing student- and learning-centered programming to support student success. + Familiarity with student development theory and academic advising principles. + Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively, within the department and with faculty and other administrators. + Strong organizational, project management, communication (written and oral), and facilitation skills. + Strong data management and computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office Suite, and an aptitude to learn new systems as needed. + Experience using CUNYfirst (PeopleSoft), a plus. + Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed. **CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW** Provides expert and/or specialized academic counseling a diverse student population. - Offers comprehensive advisement to full-time and part-time students - Works with other academic affairs staff as well as enrollment and student affairs to assist students to declare majors and select appropriate courses - Monitors students' performances and takes appropriate action if necessary; resolves students' problems regarding curricular requirements - Develops academic plans and performs graduation audits - Provides information to students regarding student support services, college policies and program procedures and guidelines - Facilitates workshops; assists with other department activities such as course scheduling - Establishes and maintains student advisement files; prepares activity reports and analyses - May supervise extramural activities, such as internships and community service; may assist with accreditation efforts as needed - May provide career and transfer services and/or specialized program counseling - May supervise junior advising and/or clerical staff - Performs related duties as assigned.
