Position Summary:
The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) invites applications for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher position to conduct fundamental studies on the physics of solar small-scale activity and solar eruptions with the data generated with the Goode Solar Telescope (GST) at BBSO. This is a grant-funded position with an initial term of one year, renewable for up to three years total, contingent upon satisfactory performance and continued grant funding.
Essential Functions:
- Acquisition, processing, and archiving of high-resolution imaging spectroscopy and polarimetry data with GST.
- Optimize the existing BBSO Data Processing/Pipeline System to generate the requisite dataset in compliance with the NASA Solar Data Analysis Center (SDAC)'s requirement.
- Deliver the processed set of observations to SDAC and make the data and metadata available to the public via the Virtual Solar Observatory.
- Conduct research using GST and PSP data.
- Work closely with and mentor a Ph.D. student on all aspects of the research project.
- Prepare and deliver professional presentations at national and international conferences.
Pre-Requisite Qualifications:
- A recently awarded Ph.D. in a relevant field, such as Astronomy, Computer Science, or Physics.
- Experience of observations with ground-based telescopes, high-resolution data processing, analysis, and archiving, and coordination with NASA solar space missions.
- An ability to work and live at an elevation of 2000 meters.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven record of scholarly publication.
Preferred Qualifications
The preference will be given to a candidate who is experienced, self-motivated, and versatile.
  • The ideal candidate would have experience in observations with ground-based telescopes, high-resolution data processing, analysis, and archiving, and coordination with NASA solar space missions.
  • Familiarity with telescope operation and data analysis, such as observing, data calibration and alignment, image reconstruction, polarization data calibration, and inversion.
  • The successful candidate will assume full responsibility for managing the GST data pipeline in support of the NASA PSP mission.

At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
