Job Description
The Senior Software Engineer role focuses on developing secure new applications and functionality, enhancing and supporting existing applications, providing system redundancy, and collaborating closely with AA&D staff and cross-functional teams to deliver innovative, cost-effective, and timely solutions. The Senior Software Engineer is responsible for leading application development efforts and adhering to Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) best practices. The role performs the full application development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, functional analysis, design, development, unit testing, documentation, implementation, maintenance, and support of applications and reports. Key responsibilities include developing PL/SQL stored procedures, functions, packages, triggers, and supporting database objects. The role may leverage Oracle AOP, Dynamic SQL, ref cursors, bulk collection, explain plans, materialized views, shell scripting, and performance tuning techniques. The position also applies knowledge of object-oriented programming, API development, and API management to build scalable and maintainable solutions. The Senior Software Engineer uses Oracle APEX, JavaScript, jQuery, CSS, and web services to rapidly deliver secure, user-focused web applications and reports. This role employs REST design principles in the development of web services and integrations and works to ensure application usability, security, reliability, and performance. The position is responsible for troubleshooting critical production issues and providing timely resolution. It also provides architectural guidance and leadership on software development best practices, user interface design frameworks, server-side development, integrations, messaging solutions, and related tools and technologies. The role evaluates the Oracle APEX technology roadmap and emerging tools to identify capabilities that would benefit the HMS-AAD platform. In addition, the Senior Software Engineer collaborates with consultants, vendors, and internal technology partners as needed to conduct code reviews, security reviews, integrations, and adoption of best practices. The role serves as a technical liaison to internal and external stakeholders, mentors junior staff, and researches new technologies, tools, and software products to determine their feasibility and alignment with the organization's technology strategy.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum of seven years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:
• Experience designing interactive Oracle APEX applications.
• Ability to develop software in Java, JavaScript, PL/SQL, or other programming languages.
• Experience developing web applications using at least one popular web framework.
• Experience with test-driven development.
• Proficiency with software engineering tools and development best practices.
• Ability to document business and technical requirements, specifications, and solutions clearly.
• Excellent knowledge of relational databases and database-driven applications.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
• Strong interpersonal, facilitation, and consensus-building skills.
• Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
• Proven ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with staff at all organizational levels.
• Experience with higher education fundraising is a plus.
• Strategic approach to problem-solving and the ability to develop and communicate a sound plan.
• Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to connect product design and features to strategic objectives.
• Experience with both Agile and Lean development methodologies.

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred.

Work Format Details
This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location.
