Job Title:
Principal Manager, Internal Communications – Research 

Working Model:
Hybrid – Wednesday is the anchor onsite day; other onsite days are negotiable

Schedule:
Monday through Friday; occasional weekends may be required in rare cases

Working Hours:
Standard eight-hour shift

Travel Requirement:
One week in Monterey, CA for team meeting
Pay: $80/hr

Position Overview
Join as Principal Manager, Internal Communications on a 12-month contract for one of our clients. In this strategic position, you’ll play a critical role in shaping the internal communications infrastructure for the Research organization. As part of the Research Communications team, you will partner with leaders to develop scalable frameworks, tools, and governance that enhance clarity, consistency, and impact across departments.

This role is ideal for a senior communications professional who excels at building from the ground up and enjoys both strategic planning and hands-on program delivery. You will lead high-impact communications initiatives, including employee-focused programs, executive messaging, and organizational events. Your expertise in change and transformation communications will help guide the Research organization through its next phase of evolution.

This position reports to the Senior Director, Head of Internal Communications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement foundational communication frameworks, processes, and best practices to drive effective departmental communication.
  • Partner with senior Research leaders to develop strategies that clarify complex business priorities and enhance employee engagement.
  • Create scalable communication models that promote consistency while accommodating unique departmental needs.
  • Lead executive communications, including crafting leadership messaging and organizing town halls and other critical events.
  • Spearhead employee engagement programs and Research-wide initiatives, such as leadership forums and high-visibility meetings.
  • Develop and execute communication plans supporting organizational priorities, scientific milestones, and engagement efforts.
  • Collect and analyze employee feedback to drive actionable insights and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate across different areas and divisions to align internal communications with broader enterprise objectives.
  • Support communications for organizational change, helping leaders communicate transparently and empathetically.
  • Introduce and refine modern communication practices, leveraging metrics and feedback for ongoing effectiveness.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS)
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in internal communications within complex, matrixed organizations
  • Direct experience supporting scientific or technical organizations in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or related fields
  • Strong expertise in strategic communications, executive communications, and employee engagement
  • Track record of designing communications frameworks and foundational capabilities
  • Ability to build credibility and influence senior leaders quickly
  • Strong project management skills; ability to drive multiple initiatives concurrently
  • Comfortable working strategically and tactically in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

Preferred:

  • Experience supporting organizational change or business transformation through communications
  • Advanced degree or background in life sciences or related field
  • Experience in both internal and external communications
  • Consulting or advisory experience with senior executives
  • Experience designing large-scale employee engagement programs, leadership events, or internal conferences
