The Council presents to City Council on issues affecting young people, plans community events, and engages in various civic activities to build their professional and leadership skills

The Hillsboro Youth Advisory Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month and attends the National League of Cities Conference each year. The Youth Advisory Council Intern will support the Youth Advisory Council in advancing its goals, initiatives, and community impact efforts for the 2026-2027 school year. This role offers a unique opportunity for individuals interested in local government, civic engagement, youth development, and curriculum planning to gain hands on experience in public administration, event coordination, leadership development, and community outreach.

This position will assist with planning and supporting bi monthly YAC meetings, coordinating special projects and events, supporting communication and outreach efforts, conducting research, and helping develop engaging educational and leadership focused content for students. The position also provides exposure to City operations and opportunities to collaborate with City staff, community partners, and youth leaders on initiatives that positively impact the Hillsboro community. The YAC Intern position will operate in a hybrid format with a combination of remote and in person work.

Attendance at in person YAC related activities and events is expected, including bi monthly YAC meetings, community engagement events, and travel opportunities such as the National League of Cities Conference, when applicable. The ideal Candidate: Is passionate about youth engagement, community service, and local government. Successful candidates are organized, dependable, and proactive individuals who are comfortable balancing multiple projects and responsibilities in a collaborative and fast paced environment.

Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills and feel comfortable engaging with students, City staff, community members, and elected officials in a professional and approachable manner. Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Has open communication is especially important in this role, including regularly looping in the supervisor, providing updates, asking questions when clarification is needed, and ensuring alignment with YAC program goals, expectations, and City priorities.

Demonstrates a genuine interest in supporting and mentoring students in their personal, academic, and leadership development. They should be approachable, encouraging, and capable of helping students navigate projects, programs, and collaborative initiatives in a supportive and professional manner. Has a strong willingness to learn, receive feedback, and continuously develop new skills is essential, particularly in areas related to local government, youth engagement, community outreach, and program coordination.

Previous Youth Advisory Council experience is preferred but not required. The position may also involve assisting with student supervision and chaperoning responsibilities during meetings, conferences, field trips, and community events. Candidates should be prepared to work in dynamic and fast paced environments, exercise sound judgment, remain calm under pressure, and respond professionally to unexpected or stressful situations while prioritizing student safety and program success.

Projects to Assist with for the 2026-2027 School Year: Youth Advisory Council Retreat Planning and Facilitation (September 2026) - Support the planning, coordination, and facilitation of the annual YAC Retreat, including team building activities, leadership development sessions, goal setting, orientation support, and preparation for the upcoming YAC year. YAC Meetings and Program Operations - Assist with the coordination and execution of bi monthly YAC meetings beginning September 5, 2026 until June 8, 2027 including agenda development, meeting logistics, guest speaker coordination, student engagement activities, and follow up communication. YAC Calendar and Curriculum Development - Support the development of the annual YAC program calendar and curriculum by helping organize meeting topics, leadership development activities, civic engagement opportunities, workshops, and educational programming throughout the year.

YAC Sub Committee Assignments and Project Management Curriculum - Support the development and implementation of YAC sub committee structures, assignments, and project management curriculum designed to help students build leadership, collaboration, communication, and organizational skills while working on student led initiatives. State of the City Preparation and Youth Engagement Support- Assist in preparing YAC students for participation and engagement opportunities connected to the City's State of the City event, including logistics coordination, communications, student preparation, and event support. National League of Cities Conference Preparation and Support - Support preparation for student participation in conferences and professional development opportunities, including logistics coordination, student preparation activities, travel support, and post conference presentations and reflections.

If I Were Mayor Contest Coordination (May 2027) - Assist with coordination of the annual If I Were Mayor Contest, including outreach to schools, communication with participants, organization of submissions, event coordination, and support for recognition activities connected to City Council. Special Projects and City Initiatives - Provide support on emerging projects and special initiatives connected to youth engagement, community outreach, and City priorities as assigned by the City Management Coordinator. Intern Professional Development Planning - Work closely with the City Management Coordinator to develop a professional development plan tailored to the intern's interests and career goals, including opportunities for mentorship, networking, exposure to local government operations, leadership development, and participation in professional trainings, meetings, and events The Youth Advisory Council Intern position falls under the general Intern job classification.

Coordinate communication between YAC members, City staff, and other stakeholders. Assist in the development, planning, and execution of YAC projects and initiatives.

Maintain the YAC calendar, scheduling meetings, events, and activities. Event Planning and Coordination: Help plan and organize YAC events, including community service projects, professional development workshops, and social events. Assist with event logistics, coordinating volunteers, and managing supplies.

Coordinate with City's Communications Divisions to promote events through social media, flyers, and community outreach. Youth Leadership Development: Support the development and implementation of youth-focused programs and curriculum. Coordinate and advise on numerous projects and subcommittees with YAC Plan and execute the recruitment of new YAC members, officers, and future interns Outreach and Community Engagement: Develop and implement strategies to increase youth participation in YAC activities.

Represent the YAC at community events, meetings, and public forums. Engage with local schools, youth organizations, and community groups to build partnerships. Acceptable Experience and Training: TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Must be enrolled in an educational institution (secondary or post-secondary) or have graduated recently.

Level of education and experience needed will vary based on assignment requirements. LICENSE(S) / CERTIFICATIONS: Valid, current Driver's License and safe driving record Ability to be on site at various Hillsboro locations. Willing to travel as needed.
