What is the difference between Intern Performance Tester vs Performance Tester?

AspectIntern Performance TesterPerformance Tester
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in computer science or related fieldUsually requires a degree in computer science, software engineering, or related field, with certifications like ISTQB
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, supervised, learning-focusedProfessional, project-driven, often part of a QA or testing team
ResponsibilitiesAssisting in testing, learning testing tools, documenting resultsDesigning test cases, analyzing performance, using testing tools and scripts

In summary, an Intern Performance Tester is an entry-level role focused on learning and assisting with testing tasks, while a Performance Tester is a more experienced professional responsible for executing performance tests and analyzing results.

Do interns get performance reviews?

Intern performance testers typically receive performance reviews to assess their skills, progress, and contributions during the internship. These reviews often occur at the midpoint and end of the internship period and may include feedback on testing techniques, tools used, and overall performance. Regular reviews help interns understand expectations and improve their skills for future roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Intern Performance Tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Performance Tester, you generally need a basic understanding of software testing principles, familiarity with programming or scripting languages, and coursework or experience in computer science or information technology. Experience with performance testing tools such as JMeter, LoadRunner, or similar platforms is often required, along with knowledge of operating systems and databases. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying issues and collaborating with development teams. These skills and qualities enable accurate assessment of software performance, contributing to reliable and efficient applications.

What are some common challenges faced by an Intern Performance Tester and how can they be overcome?

Intern Performance Testers often face challenges such as understanding complex testing tools, interpreting performance metrics, and adapting to fast-paced project timelines. To overcome these, it's helpful to seek guidance from senior testers, participate in team discussions, and engage in hands-on practice with tools like JMeter or LoadRunner. Regular feedback sessions and active collaboration with developers and QA engineers can also help interns quickly build confidence and improve their testing skills.

What does a performance tester do?

A performance tester evaluates software applications to ensure they meet speed, stability, and scalability requirements under expected workloads. They design and execute tests using tools like JMeter or LoadRunner, analyze results, and identify performance bottlenecks to improve system efficiency.

Are there any legit product testing jobs?

Product testing jobs, including roles like intern performance testers, are legitimate opportunities that involve evaluating products for quality, usability, and performance. These jobs often require attention to detail, reporting skills, and sometimes specific knowledge of testing tools or standards. Candidates should verify the company's credibility and avoid offers that require upfront payments or seem suspicious.

Is performance testing a good career?

Performance testing is a specialized role within software testing that focuses on evaluating system speed, stability, and scalability using tools like JMeter or LoadRunner. It offers steady demand, opportunities for skill development, and can lead to roles in quality assurance or performance engineering, making it a viable career choice for those interested in software quality and technical analysis.

What are Intern Performance Testers?

Intern Performance Testers are entry-level professionals, often students or recent graduates, who assist in evaluating how well software applications perform under various conditions. Their main responsibilities include designing and running performance tests, analyzing results, and helping identify bottlenecks or issues that could impact the user experience. Working closely with senior testers and developers, they gain hands-on experience in performance testing tools and methodologies. This role is a valuable starting point for a career in software quality assurance or testing.

Job description

Looking for an exciting opportunity to learn more about Mechanical Engineering this Summer? Join our team in Salt Lake City!
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to research, evaluate, and present mechanical options for modifying the shock absorption characteristics of an installed wood sports floor system. This project will support the development of practical concepts that could improve or adjust floor performance without requiring full floor replacement.
The intern will work with R&D and the technical service team to understand current wood floor construction methods, shock absorption performance requirements, and potential mechanical approaches for changing system response after installation.
Your Day to Day
  • Research existing wood sports floor construction systems, subfloor designs, pads, sleepers, panels, anchors, fasteners, and resilient components.
  • Identify mechanical methods that could increase, decrease, or fine-tune shock absorption in an already-installed wood floor.
  • Review relevant industry performance concepts such as shock absorption, vertical deformation, ball rebound, vibration response, dead spots, and long-term durability.
  • Collaborate with internal subject matter experts to understand real-world constraints.
  • Prepare sketches, diagrams, simple models, or calculations to explain each proposed mechanical concept.
  • Compare options in a clear decision matrix.
  • Develop and deliver a final PowerPoint presentation summarizing findings, recommended options, risks, and next steps.

What we would love about you:
  • Curiosity about how mechanical systems perform in real-world installed conditions.
  • Ability to think creatively about retrofit solutions and practical field constraints.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Willingness to ask questions and engage with technical experts.
  • Ability to balance engineering theory with manufacturability, installation practicality, and customer impact.
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Expected to be between junior and senior year at the time of internship.
  • Strong interest in mechanical systems, materials, product design, structural behavior, or sports surfaces.
  • Ability to conduct technical research and translate findings into practical recommendations.
  • Comfortable creating PowerPoint presentations, tables, diagrams, and summary reports.
  • Basic understanding of mechanics, springs/dampers, vibration, load transfer, materials, and structural response.
  • Experience with CAD, Excel, or basic engineering analysis tools is helpful but not required.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work independently with guidance.

Final Deliverable
The intern will prepare a professional presentation that includes:
  • Summary of key mechanical and material variables affecting floor response, durability and reliability.
  • Pros, cons, risks, and cost considerations for each option.
  • Recommended concepts for further testing or prototyping.
  • Open technical questions and suggested next steps.

What you would love about us
This internship will provide exposure to sports flooring systems, mechanical performance testing concepts, product development, field installation practices, and customer-driven engineering problem solving. The intern will gain experience converting a technical research assignment into a business-ready recommendation presentation.
At Gerflor USA we strive to improve people's lives by providing safe and creative flooring solutions that exceed their needs and contribute to a better world. Join our team and help make the world a better place today!
