Job description

1. Education: Must be accepted and enrolled in an NAACLS accredited MLT program and in first semester of technician coursework, which will award an associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science upon successful completion.

A Medical Lab Technician Intern must commit to one year of service with Unity Health after graduation. A Medical Lab Technician Extern will have no defined commitment.

2. Training and Experience: No prior experience necessary. Previous experience as lab assistant is desirable but not required.

3. Job Knowledge: Must demonstrate a willingness to learn. Must be able to communicate effectively with all hospital personnel and present a courteous and professional manner to the public.

4. Safety Sensitive: YES

In the interest of protecting the health and safety of all patients, associates, and guests, Unity Health has classified some positions as “safety sensitive.” A “safety sensitive” position is any job position in which impaired performance could result in harm to the health and/or safety of self or others. Any associate that is actively engaged in the use of medical marijuana, even if in possession of a valid medical marijuana card, will be excluded from employment in a “safety sensitive” position.

DESCRIPTION:

Responsible for collecting blood from patients and donors, identifying and labeling all drawn blood accurately for tests, and/or blood donations. Also responsible for accurately collecting and recording patient and donor information, monitoring patients through procedures, and storing samples as required. This position requires knowledge in the care of patients served as indicated: Neonate and infant birth up to one year, Childhood and Adolescence is one year to 17 years, Adult is 18 to 65 years, and Geriatric is 65 years and above.

Physical Effort: Walking, bending, using stairs, working with bio-hazardous material, wearing of protective material as required by OSHA.

A Medical Lab Technician Intern must commit to a minimum duration of one year of service with Unity Health after graduation. A Medical Lab Technician Extern will have no defined commitment.
