What does an intern geriatric social worker do?

An Intern Geriatric Social Worker assists licensed social workers in providing support and services to older adults and their families. Their duties often include conducting assessments, helping clients access community resources, coordinating care plans, and offering emotional support. Interns also learn about issues like elder abuse, cognitive decline, and the social challenges faced by seniors. This experience helps them develop the skills needed for a career in geriatric social work.

What kinds of responsibilities can an intern geriatric social worker expect during their placement?

As an intern geriatric social worker, you can expect to assist with client assessments, support care planning, and help coordinate services for older adults. Your daily tasks may include shadowing experienced social workers during home visits, documenting client progress, and facilitating group activities or support sessions. Interns often collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, such as nurses, physicians, and family members, to ensure holistic care. This hands-on exposure provides valuable experience in case management and enhances your understanding of the unique challenges faced by the elderly population.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern geriatric social worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Geriatric Social Worker, you need foundational knowledge of social work principles, aging-related issues, and a degree or enrollment in a social work program. Familiarity with case management systems, documentation processes, and basic assessment tools is often required. Excellent listening skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to build trust with elderly clients and their families are critical soft skills. These skills and qualities are essential for providing effective support, coordinating resources, and advocating for the well-being of older adults.
