Day (United States of America)HIM/Coding InternJob Description Summary
The Coding Intern will gain hands-on experience in Health Information Management by working closely with either the HIM Operations, HIM Coding, and Release of Information (ROI) teams. This role provides exposure to medical coding practices, chart analysis, and compliance processes while learning from experienced coding professionals in preparation to grow into a coding role. The intern will assist in operational tasks within HIM and participate in coding education sessions to develop foundational skills in ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma Required, Associates degree preferred

  • AHIMA or AAPC credentials strongly preferred but not required.

  • HIM or healthcare experience preferred

  • Basic understanding of medical terminology and anatomy preferred.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.

  • Strong communication, analytical, and problemsolving skills.

  • Epic EHR system experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of HIPAA

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with chart processing, including prepping and scanning of paper records, and analysis to ensure accuracy and completeness.

  • Assist with answering phones for the HIM department and provide exceptional customer service

  • Support quality assurance activities related to documentation and coding compliance.

  • Learn how coding impacts revenue cycle and clinical data integrity.

  • Help process patient record requests in compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies.

  • Gain understanding of privacy regulations and secure handling of health information.

  • Collaborate with the coding leadership team to learn coding principles and workflows.

  • Participate in coding training sessions led by certified coding professionals.

  • Learn to apply coding guidelines to real-world scenarios under supervision.

  • Assist with special projects related to coding audits, data analysis, and reporting.
