As of Jun 23, 2026, the average hourly pay for intern cyber security engineer in the United States is $20.34, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.11 and $22.36 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can I make $200 a year in cyber security?

As an Intern Cyber Security Engineer, earning $200 annually is highly unlikely, as entry-level cybersecurity roles typically pay significantly more, often starting at several thousand dollars per year. Internships usually offer stipends or hourly wages, and total annual earnings depend on hours worked, experience, and location. Achieving such a low annual income would not meet standard compensation for cybersecurity internships or entry-level positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Intern Cyber Security Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Cyber Security Engineer, you need a foundational understanding of networking, operating systems, and security principles, often supported by coursework in computer science or cybersecurity. Familiarity with tools like Wireshark, Kali Linux, and basic scripting languages, as well as introductory certifications such as CompTIA Security+, is highly beneficial. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help you identify threats and collaborate with teams effectively. These skills and qualities are essential for detecting vulnerabilities, supporting security initiatives, and contributing to the overall protection of organizational assets.

What does an Intern Cyber Security Engineer do?

An Intern Cyber Security Engineer assists experienced security professionals in protecting an organization's computer systems and networks from cyber threats. Typical tasks include monitoring security tools, responding to incidents, conducting vulnerability assessments, and helping to implement security measures. Interns often work on real-world projects, learn about industry standards, and gain hands-on experience with security technologies. They may also participate in training sessions and contribute to documentation or research. This role provides valuable exposure to the field and helps interns build foundational skills for a future career in cyber security.

Can I get an internship in cyber security?

Yes, internships in cyber security are available for students and entry-level candidates interested in gaining practical experience. These internships often require foundational knowledge of networking, security principles, and tools like firewalls or intrusion detection systems, and may require relevant certifications or coursework. They provide hands-on training in threat analysis, vulnerability assessment, and security protocols within a professional environment.

Is 25 too late for cyber security?

Age is not a barrier to becoming an intern cyber security engineer; many professionals start careers in cybersecurity at various ages. Success depends on acquiring relevant skills, certifications like CompTIA Security+ or CISSP, and gaining practical experience through training or internships. Entry-level roles often value skills and knowledge over age, making 25 a suitable age to begin a cybersecurity career path.

Can you make $500,000 a year in cyber security?

Intern Cyber Security Engineers typically earn salaries below $100,000 annually, with higher earnings possible for experienced professionals such as senior security engineers or security architects. Reaching $500,000 a year generally requires extensive experience, advanced certifications, specialized skills, and leadership roles in large organizations or consulting firms.

What types of projects and tasks can an Intern Cyber Security Engineer expect to work on during their internship?

As an Intern Cyber Security Engineer, you can expect to participate in a variety of hands-on projects such as assisting in vulnerability assessments, monitoring security events, and helping to implement security solutions. You may also support the team with incident response activities, documentation of security policies, and conducting research on emerging threats. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced engineers, gaining exposure to real-world security challenges and learning industry best practices. This experience provides valuable insight into the day-to-day operations of a cyber security team and helps build a strong foundation for a future career in the field.
