What does an intern architect do?

An Intern Architect assists licensed architects in the design and planning of buildings and structures. Their tasks typically include preparing drawings, creating models, conducting research, and helping with project documentation. They work under the supervision of a registered architect as they gain practical experience required for licensure. Intern Architects also collaborate with clients, engineers, and contractors to ensure that projects meet design, safety, and regulatory standards.

What are the typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for an intern architect within an architectural firm?

As an Intern Architect, you can expect to assist with developing design concepts, creating drawings and 3D models, and preparing construction documents under the guidance of licensed architects. You'll likely participate in project meetings, collaborate with engineers and consultants, and gain exposure to building codes and project workflows. This role provides hands-on experience with design software, insight into the full project lifecycle, and opportunities to build a professional portfolio. Internships are designed to foster growth, so expect regular feedback and mentorship while working on real-world projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Architect, you need a solid foundation in architectural design principles, drafting, and building codes, typically backed by a professional degree in architecture. Familiarity with software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, as well as progress toward licensure through programs like the Architectural Experience Program (AXP), is highly valued. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication help an intern architect excel in collaborating with colleagues and clients. These skills and qualifications are vital for producing quality design work, supporting project delivery, and advancing toward full architectural licensure.

What is the difference between Intern Architect vs Architectural Designer?

AspectIntern ArchitectArchitectural Designer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or has completed architecture degree; may be working towards licensureUsually holds a degree in architecture; may or may not be licensed
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in architecture firms, gaining practical experienceDesign-focused roles, often in architecture or design firms, involved in project development
Employer & Industry UsageCommonly used for entry-level positions in architecture firmsUsed for design roles, sometimes at a similar level but with more responsibility

Intern Architects are in the early stages of their architecture careers, focusing on gaining practical experience and working towards licensure. Architectural Designers typically have more design responsibilities and may be more involved in project development, often with a completed degree. Both roles are integral to architecture firms but differ mainly in experience level and scope of work.

How to get an internship in architecture?

To secure an internship as an architect, candidates should build a strong portfolio showcasing design skills, gain relevant experience through coursework or related fields, and apply to firms or programs that offer internship opportunities. A basic understanding of design software like AutoCAD or Revit and good communication skills are also beneficial. Many internships require current enrollment in an architecture degree program or completion of foundational coursework.
