BACKGROUND
The Los Angeles City Fire Department has one Exempt opportunity for Administrative Intern I/II (Geographic Information Systems Intern). The Administrative Intern position will be assigned to the Department's ITB/GIS Division.
WORK SCHEDULE
Administrative Intern's are employed on an as-needed basis. Working hours will be scheduled between 7:00 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with a maximum of 1000 hours per service year, with 39 hours of CTPO. A service year begins on the start date of employment and on each anniversary date thereafter. There are no telecommuting opportunities and Administrative Interns are expected to work in the office. Assigned schedule will be coordinated and determined based on the specific needs of the respective units.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the Supervisor, the Class performs the following duties:
  • Spatial Data Management: Collect, clean, update, and maintain geospatial datasets .
  • Map Creation & Visualization: Design and produce static and interactive maps, dashboards (e.g., ArcGIS Online/Pro), and infographics to visualize data trends.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Perform spatial and remote sensing analyses to support LAFD Operations .
  • Database Quality Control: Assist in performing quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) checks on incoming departmental data to ensure geographical accuracy and database integrity .

REQUIREMENTS
  • Education: (Admin Intern I) Current enrollment with 3 years of education completed, or (Admin Intern II) recent graduation from an accredited college or university with a major or coursework in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Data Science, Urban Planning, Information Technology, or a closely related field.
  • Technical Proficiencies: Hands-on experience using GIS software suites (e.g., Esri ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Remote Sensing).
  • Familiarity with spatial data formats (shapefiles, geodatabases, KML) and coordinate systems/projections.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30lbs.
  • Driver's License may be required at time of hire.
