What is an Intermediate Unit?

An Intermediate Unit (IU) is a regional educational service agency in certain states, such as Pennsylvania, that supports local school districts and nonpublic schools. IUs provide a variety of services, including special education, professional development, curriculum support, and technology assistance. They serve as a bridge between the state Department of Education and local schools, helping to implement educational initiatives and share resources efficiently. IUs are designed to improve the quality and efficiency of education by pooling resources and expertise across multiple districts.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working at an Intermediate Unit, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals at an Intermediate Unit often navigate challenges such as coordinating services across multiple school districts, adapting to varying district needs, and managing diverse educational programs. Collaboration and strong communication skills are essential, as teams frequently work with educators, administrators, and state agencies. Staying proactive with ongoing professional development and leveraging shared resources can help address these challenges, ensuring that students and schools receive consistent and effective support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Intermediate Unit professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Intermediate Unit (IU) role, you typically need a background in education, special education, or administration, often with a relevant teaching certificate or administrative credential. Familiarity with educational software, data management systems, and compliance regulations such as IDEA and Section 504 is essential. Strong collaboration, organizational, and communication skills set individuals apart in supporting schools and districts. These competencies are vital to effectively deliver resources, training, and support services that enhance educational outcomes across multiple school districts.

Job description

Description
We are seeking a dedicated and highly attentive Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Nurse to join our intermediate care team. As a PCU Nurse, you will care for patients who are too ill for a general medical-surgical unit but stable enough to avoid the Intensive Care Unit. These patients often require close monitoring, advanced cardiac support, and frequent assessments as they transition between critical and stable conditions.
Your responsibilities will include monitoring telemetry, managing complex medication regimens, supporting post-surgical recovery, and responding to subtle changes in patient condition. You'll work closely with physicians, respiratory therapists, and fellow nurses to deliver targeted, evidence-based care with a focus on patient safety and progression toward discharge.
Success in this role requires strong clinical judgment, excellent time management, and the ability to prioritize care for multiple patients with evolving needs. You will also play a key role in educating patients and families about recovery plans, medications, and follow-up care.
If you are passionate about providing high-acuity care in a supportive, team-oriented setting, we invite you to grow with us in the PCU.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Active RN license
- BLS certification
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience
