Intermediate Software Developer information

What is an intermediate software developer?

Intermediate software developers are professionals with a few years of experience in software development, typically ranging from 2 to 5 years. They possess a solid understanding of programming languages, software design principles, and development tools. Unlike junior developers, intermediate developers are expected to work more independently, contribute to larger projects, and may mentor less experienced team members. They often collaborate with other developers, designers, and stakeholders to build, test, and maintain software applications.

What are some typical challenges that intermediate software developers face when transitioning from junior roles?

Intermediate Software Developers often encounter challenges such as taking on more complex projects, balancing multiple priorities, and increasing responsibility for code quality and maintainability. At this level, you'll likely be expected to contribute to architectural decisions, mentor junior developers, and collaborate more closely with cross-functional teams such as QA and product management. Navigating these new expectations requires effective communication, strong problem-solving skills, and a proactive approach to continuous learning. Embracing feedback and seeking guidance from senior team members can help you grow and succeed in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intermediate Software Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C#), software development principles, and typically a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and relevant frameworks is expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset help developers navigate complex projects and work well within teams. These skills and qualities are vital for building robust software solutions, ensuring code quality, and contributing positively to project outcomes.

What is the difference between Intermediate Software Developer vs Junior Software Developer?

Understanding these differences helps employers and candidates set appropriate expectations for each role.

Job description

TELUS Health is empowering every person to live their healthiest life. Guided by our vision, we are leveraging the power of our leading edge technology and focusing on the uniqueness of each individual to create the future of health. As a global-leading health and well-being provider - encompassing physical, mental and financial health - TELUS Health is improving health outcomes for consumers, patients, healthcare professionals, employers and employees.

Join our team and what we'll accomplish together
You'll join the Benefits Administration team at TELUS, where we serve millions of Canadian employees at major enterprises. We maintain and evolve two critical platforms-the legacy Powerflex system and our modern, cutting-edge ABL (Area Benefits LifeWorks) platform-that enable employees to access and manage their benefits. Your work directly impacts how millions of Canadians interact with their employee benefits every single day.
You'll work closely with Business Analysts, product managers, and backend developers to understand the broader context of what we're building. You'll take ownership of tickets from start to finish, ask clarifying questions, and deploy solutions that solve real problems for real users.
Benefits administration is a regulated, high-stakes domain. We serve complex client needs across multiple lines of business (pension, welfare, etc.), and we don't drop features to fit capacity-we hire great people to deliver them. You'll work on systems that matter, with a team that cares about quality, stability, and continuous improvement.

What you'll do

You'll take ownership of frontend tickets-the full journey from analysis to deployment.

  • Design, develop, and maintain robust frontend features using Angular.

  • Collaborate closely with agile team members, including BAs and Tech Leads, to refine user stories and technical implementation details.

  • Integrate frontend components seamlessly with existing backend Web APIs and REST endpoints.

  • Ensure UI/UX consistency, code quality, and optimal performance across the application.

  • Collaborate with backend developers to understand service architecture and API design, partner with Business Analysts to validate user workflows, and work with product managers to understand the "why" behind features.

  • This isn't about following a checklist-it's about taking initiative, thinking critically, and owning outcomes.

What you bring
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, with a heavy specialization in Angular.

  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS/SCSS. You understand semantic HTML, accessible design, and responsive layouts.

  • Experience integrating frontend features with REST APIs and backend services. You understand how frontend and backend work together and can debug integration issues.

  • Proven experience consuming and working strictly against backend APIs.

  • Solid understanding of Agile methodologies and version control (e.g., Git).

  • Strong communication skills. You can explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, ask clarifying questions, and articulate your ideas clearly.

  • Initiative and resourcefulness. You don't wait to be told what to do. You research, ask senior developers for perspective, and figure things out. You're comfortable with ambiguity and self-directed learning.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Agile methodologies and experience with user stories

  • Continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices

  • Git and version control workflows

  • Experience in benefits administration, insurance, or regulated industries (not required-we value problem-solving skills)

  • AngularJS experience (we maintain legacy code and may rewrite it; helpful but not required)

  • Understanding of backend technologies like C# or .NET (helps you understand the full-stack picture)

Salary Range: $60000 - $85000

Actual total compensation will be determined based on factors such as knowledge, skills, performance and experience. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply, even if the posted salary range doesn't match your expectations. We're open to discussing competitive compensation packages tailored to your experience level and expertise.

TELUS Health offers rewarding benefits, which may vary per job function, such as:

  • Comprehensive total rewards package highlighting competitive salary and bonus structures, minimum 3 weeks of vacation, and flexible benefits plan to meet the needs of you and your family
  • Flexibility to work in-office, virtually or a combination of both
  • Generous company matched pension
  • Opportunity to give back to communities in which we work, live and serve
  • Career growth and learning & development opportunities to develop your skills
  • And much more...

Job Type: This is for a current vacancy.

A bit about us

We're a people-focused, customer-first, purpose-driven team who works together every day to innovate and do good. We improve lives through our technology solutions and foster a culture of innovation that empowers team members to solve complex problems and create remarkable human outcomes in a digital world.

TELUS is proud to foster an inclusive culture that embraces diversity. We are committed to fair employment practices and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment. We offer accommodation for applicants with disabilities, as required, during the recruitment process.

Disclaimer: In accordance with the TELUS Health Solutions Data Center Security Policy, as a condition of employment, all team members whose job functions require they work at a Data Center and/or have access to detailed knowledge of technology related to client service delivery, are subject to a Personnel Security Screening conducted through the Government of Canada.

Note for Quebec candidates: if knowledge of English is required for this position, it is because the team member will be asked, on a regular basis, to interact in English with external or internal parties or to use English applications or software as part of their tasks.

By applying to this role, you understand and agree that your information will be shared with the TELUS Group of Companies' Talent Acquisition team(s) and/or any leader(s) who will be part of the selection process.
