Job description

Position summary:

Operate or tend painting machines to paint interior surfaces of railcar equipment. Trained in mixing his own paint according to manufacturer's product data sheet. Performs quality checks of his paint job while using a wet mil gauge to inspect the proper thickness of product coating

Tasks:

  • Spray coating applications over prepared surfaces with specified amounts of primers or finish coatings.
  • Select the correct application systems for coatings being applied
  • Operate lifting and moving devices in order to move equipment or materials so that areas to be painted are accessible.
  • Disassemble, clean, and reassemble sprayers and power equipment, using solvents, wire brushes, and cloths for cleaning duties
  • Identify flaws such as blisters, runs/sags and streaks so that their causes can be corrected.
  • Dispose of hazardous waste in an appropriate manner.
  • Oversees painter prep personnel for proper preparation prior to applying coatings.
  • Verify paint consistency, using a viscosity meter.
  • Set up portable equipment such as ventilators, exhaust units, ladders, and scaffolding.
  • Adjust controls on infrared ovens, heat lamps, portable ventilators, and exhaust units in order to speed the drying of coatings between coats.
  • Use of proper testing techniques to meet the quality standards of AAR and NACE.
  • Responsible for proper completion of all paperwork on reporting procedures.
  • Trained to perform intermediate and final bake procedures on all railcar and/or equipment.
  • Atmospheric testing and holiday testing procedures when required.

Skills:

  • Ability to paint efficiently and consistently in all positions.
  • Able to stand for long periods of time with limited breaks.
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds and team lift up to 150 pounds.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and elements for an extended period of time.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to work at elevated heights.
  • Must be able to read and comprehend basic drawings and scope of work.
  • Must possess basic math skills, addition, subtraction.
  • Requires the use of a tight-fitting respirator; You must be appropriately clean-shaven per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, at all times.
