Job description

Description
Part-Time Interior Designer - Hospitality & Spa Development
Flexible Hours | Project-Based | Scottsdale, AZ
Original Ventures is seeking an experienced, highly resourceful Design Consultant to help bring distinctive spa, hospitality, and commercial spaces from concept through completion.
We are looking for someone with a strong design eye who also understands the practical side of getting a project built. This is not simply a mood-board or conceptual design position. The right person can select beautiful materials, understand measurements and quantities, source products at the right price, coordinate with architects and contractors, and help ownership make fast, informed design decisions.
You will work directly with ownership, architects, contractors, vendors, and suppliers to develop and execute cohesive interior environments that feel elevated, memorable, comfortable, and intentional-while remaining functional, durable, and financially responsible.
What You'll Do
  • Develop and refine the overall interior design direction, material palette, and aesthetic for spa and hospitality projects.
  • Select and specify flooring, tile, stone, countertops, cabinetry, millwork, wall finishes, paint, plumbing fixtures, lighting, hardware, doors, mirrors, furniture, décor, and other FF&E.
  • Create and organize finish schedules, specifications, selections, and design packages that contractors can actually build from.
  • Accurately measure spaces and calculate material quantities needed for purchasing and installation.
  • Source materials and products from local and national vendors while balancing design, cost, lead times, durability, and availability.
  • Obtain pricing, compare vendors, negotiate where appropriate, and identify alternatives when products are overpriced, unavailable, or have excessive lead times.
  • Assist with estimating and maintaining finish and FF&E budgets.
  • Coordinate closely with architects and construction teams to ensure selections are constructible and compatible with project plans.
  • Review architectural drawings and plans and identify design issues, missing details, or opportunities before they become expensive field changes.
  • Order samples and organize physical material boards and finish presentations for ownership approval.
  • Track selections, approvals, purchasing status, lead times, substitutions, and outstanding design decisions.
  • Conduct site visits during construction to verify that design intent is being executed correctly.
  • Quickly solve design challenges that arise during construction.
  • Participate in final styling and installation to ensure the completed space feels polished and cohesive.
Who We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is both creative and execution-oriented. You should be equally comfortable selecting the perfect stone or lighting fixture and figuring out exactly how much material needs to be ordered, what it costs, when it will arrive, and whether it will work in the field.
You should have:
  • Proven interior design experience, preferably with hospitality, spas, hotels, wellness, restaurants, luxury residential, or high-end commercial projects.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating sophisticated, cohesive completed spaces-not just renderings.
  • Excellent taste with an ability to create spaces that feel high-end and distinctive without unnecessarily overspending.
  • Strong knowledge of finish materials, FF&E, construction methods, and product specifications.
  • Experience measuring, estimating quantities, sourcing, pricing, and procuring materials.
  • Ability to read and understand architectural plans, elevations, reflected ceiling plans, and construction drawings.
  • Strong vendor relationships and knowledge of where to source materials efficiently.
  • Experience working directly with contractors, architects, tradespeople, and ownership.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage hundreds of individual selections and decisions without losing track of details.
  • Ability to work independently, make recommendations confidently, and move projects forward without requiring constant direction.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain the reasoning behind design recommendations.
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving business environment where priorities can change, and decisions often need to be made quickly.
  • Experience with design and project-management software is a plus.
What Matters Most to Us
We aren't looking for someone who only knows how to make a space look beautiful. We want a designer who understands the entire path from inspiration > selection > pricing > approval > procurement > installation > finished space.
You should know how to answer questions like:
Does it look great? Will it function well? Can we actually build it? Is it available? What will it cost? How much do we need? Is there a better alternative? And will it still look great five years from now?
About Original Ventures
Original Ventures develops and operates distinctive hospitality, wellness, and commercial concepts. We value great design, speed, resourcefulness, attention to detail, and thoughtful execution.
This is a flexible-hours consulting opportunity with the potential for ongoing work across multiple development projects.
To Apply
Please submit:
  • Your resume or brief professional background
  • A portfolio showing completed projects
  • Examples of hospitality, spa, wellness, or commercial work, if available
  • Your hourly or project-based consulting rate
  • Your general availability
  • A brief description of your experience with material sourcing, estimating, procurement, and construction coordination

Bonus: Include one completed project where you were involved from initial design selections through purchasing and construction. Briefly explain your role, the approximate project budget, and how you helped keep the project on budget while maintaining the design vision.
