Your Opportunity:
We are seeking a talented and motivated mid-level Interior Designer to join our Buildings Government Services team. The primary role of the Interior Designer is to interpret and translate client requirements, project objectives, and architectural direction into cohesive, functional, and compliant interior design solutions with moderate guidance and supervision.
This role will support federal, state, and local government clients and requires a strong understanding of prescriptive project requirements, government design standards, regulatory compliance, documentation quality, and contract deliverables.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing interior design solutions that align with agency specific standards, accessibility requirements, security considerations, sustainability objectives, and project performance criteria.
This individual is expected to perform their role within the standard of care acceptable to their peers in the industry. The Interior Designer is expected to work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary teams to conceptualize, develop, and document varying aspects of the interior design, including space planning, interior architecture, finish and material selections, furniture specifications, FF&E procurement support, and construction administration services.
Your Key Responsibilities:
  • Advocate for design excellence and creativity within the practice of interior design both internally and externally.
  • Anticipate client needs to consistently deliver excellent client service.
  • Collaborate across offices and disciplines to support multiple project teams while maintaining the established project goals and design vision.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary teams including architecture, engineering, sustainability, security, and specialty consultants such as acoustic, lighting, and AV design.
  • Engage team members in design discussions and ensure adherence to the established design processes and quality management procedures.
  • Share technical knowledge and best practice with team members, clients, and project partners.
  • Solicit input from team members and seek guidance to address project challenges and technical issues.
  • Follow established standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Comply with professional ethical standards and codes.
  • Prepare and coordinate interior design deliverables in accordance with contract requirements, agency standards, and project schedules. This includes the development of construction documents and related interior design packages.
  • Coordinate with project managers and technical leads to ensure compliance with project scope, budget, quality requirements, and milestone submissions. Be an integral team member in supporting design reviews, client presentations, stakeholder meetings, and responses to agency comments throughout the duration of the project.
  • Review project documentation for compliance with applicable building codes, accessibility standards, government criteria, and quality control procedures.
  • Assist during the construction administration phase by responding to RFIs, submittal review, participate in site visits, and supporting project closeout.

Your Capabilities and Credentials:
  • Produce design solutions that are functional, innovative, and aligned with client objectives.

  • Review own work for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Interpret sketches, drawings, codes, building programs, and technical documentation.

  • Knowledge of building systems, constructability, material cost, and industry standards.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Enscape, SketchUP, and current visualization/ modeling software.
  • Working knowledge of federal design standards, government facility requirements, and applicable accessibility codes, and agency specific criteria is highly desirable.
  • Thorough understanding of all phases of architectural and interior design document production through construction administration and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Capability to mentor junior designers and take responsibility for accuracy and completeness of design documentation.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a project team environment through all phases of project delivery.
  • Engage in creative and critical thinking.
  • Ability to present to client groups and create design solutions that fulfill client needs and project requirements.
  • Proficiency in interpreting sketches, drawings, building programs, and related materials while effectively communicating the design concepts.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce technically accurate, audit-ready documentation.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize competing deadlines, and maintain quality standards.
  • Understanding furniture procurement processes, FF&E specifications, and cost estimating is preferred.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Interior Design or related field from an accredited university is required.
  • 5+ years of professional interior design experience, ideally within an architecture or multidisciplinary design firm.
  • Experience supporting federal, state, or other public-sector projects is strongly preferred.
  • NCIDQ certified or pursuing NCIDQ certification is required.
  • Portfolio demonstrating design excellence, technical competency, and project delivery experience is required.
  • Experience developing construction documents, specifications, and technical design packages for federal, state, or local government projects is highly desirable.

Pay Range:
• Locations in WA, DC & Various CA, MA areas-$79,400.00 - $115,200.00 Annually
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
Benefits Summary: Regular full-time and part-time employees (working at least 20 hours per week) have access to medical, dental, and vision plans, a wellness program, health saving accounts, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase program, life and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, short-term/long-term disability plans, emergency travel benefits, tuition reimbursement, professional membership fee coverage and paid family leave. Regular full-time and part-time employees will receive ten paid holidays in each calendar year. In addition, employees will be eligible to accrue vacation between 10 and 20 days per year and eligible for paid sick leave (and if more generous, in accordance with state and local law).
Temporary/casual employees have access to 401(k) plans, employee stock purchase program, and paid leave, in accordance with state and local law.
