What is an interim teacher?

An interim teacher is an educator hired temporarily to fill a teaching position when the regular teacher is unavailable due to reasons such as medical leave, maternity leave, or while a school searches for a permanent replacement. Interim teachers assume all classroom responsibilities, including lesson planning, instruction, and grading, to ensure continuity in students’ education. They may work for a few weeks up to an entire school year, depending on the school's needs. Interim teachers are often experienced educators who can quickly adapt to new environments and curricula.

What is the difference between Interim Teacher vs Substitute Teacher?

AspectInterim TeacherSubstitute Teacher

Work EnvironmentWorks in a specific school or district for a set period, often covering long-term absencesWorks temporarily in various schools, often on a daily basis
DurationLonger-term, often weeks or monthsShort-term, often daily or for a few days
EmployerSchool district or educational institutionSchool or district hiring on a daily or short-term basis

Interim Teachers typically hold a valid teaching certification and work in a specific school for an extended period, covering long-term absences. Substitute Teachers usually have a permit and work temporarily across multiple schools, often on a daily basis. Both roles are essential in maintaining classroom continuity but differ mainly in duration and certification requirements.

How does the role of an Interim Teacher differ from that of a permanent teacher in terms of daily responsibilities and team collaboration?

As an Interim Teacher, you'll often step into classrooms on short notice to cover for permanent staff, which means quickly adapting to established lesson plans and classroom routines. Your daily responsibilities may involve maintaining continuity of instruction, managing classroom behavior, and assessing student progress during your tenure. Collaboration with other teachers and school staff is crucial, as you'll need to coordinate on lesson materials, student needs, and school policies to ensure a smooth transition for students. While the role is temporary, it's an excellent opportunity to demonstrate adaptability and gain diverse experience across subjects or grade levels.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Interim Teacher, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interim Teacher, you typically need a relevant teaching credential, subject expertise, and classroom management skills. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), digital grading tools, and curriculum resources is often required. Flexibility, strong communication, and the ability to quickly build rapport with students and staff are standout soft skills. These abilities ensure smooth classroom transitions, effective instruction, and continuity of student learning during temporary teaching assignments.
