What is an interim controller?

An Interim Controller is a finance professional hired on a temporary basis to manage a company's accounting operations during a transition period, such as a vacancy, leave of absence, or organizational change. Their main responsibilities include overseeing financial reporting, managing accounting staff, ensuring compliance with regulations, and maintaining internal controls. Interim Controllers help ensure business continuity and may also assist with process improvements or special projects until a permanent Controller is hired.

What is an interim controller?

An interim controller is a financial leader who works on a temporary, contract basis when a controller goes on leave, or an organization is in the process of finding a permanent replacement. As an interim controller, your responsibilities are to oversee the institution’s finances and review financial data. Your other duties include creating reports based on your analysis and research, which you present to executives or other top-level managers. You typically report to the company’s CFO and work with compliance specialists to ensure that the business is adhering to all state and federal laws.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interim controller, and why are they important?

To excel as an Interim Controller, you need a solid background in accounting principles, financial reporting, and management, typically supported by a CPA or similar accounting designation. Familiarity with ERP systems, advanced Excel skills, and experience with financial consolidation tools are often required. Strong leadership, adaptability, and excellent communication skills help manage teams and navigate organizational change. These skills ensure accurate financial oversight and smooth transitions during periods of change or organizational restructuring.

What are typical challenges faced by an interim controller when stepping into a new organization?

As an Interim Controller, you may encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to the company’s existing financial systems, understanding ongoing projects, and aligning with team dynamics on short notice. It's common to be tasked with identifying process inefficiencies while maintaining day-to-day accounting operations. Effective communication and building trust with both the finance team and executive leadership are key to delivering results during your limited tenure.

Job description

Job Description Innovative Outsourcing is currently partnering with our fast-growing client, ZonPrep, to identify a highly skilled, hands-on Controller to lead their finance function during a period of significant scale. Position: Full- Time Controller Company: ZonPrep Salary: $115,000-$130,000 plus benefits Location: Hybrid (Must be able to commute to McDonough, GA periodically) ZonPrep is a fast-growing, multi-facility third-party logistics (3PL) and Amazon FBA prep operation. The business is scaling rapidly, currently operating with a workforce of 125 employees and two warehouses with a footprint of approximately 200,000 square feet each.

They are seeking a financial leader to help us professionalize their finance department, build robust processes, and support their continued growth. The Role This is a hands-on, build-phase Controller role-not a high-level manager of a large team. You will be the primary owner of ZonPrep's books, responsible for establishing accounting policies and integrating systems that allow finance to scale with the business.

Your primary initiative will be leading the transition from cash to accrual accounting. Key Responsibilities Accounting Policy & Conversion: Lead the end-to-end conversion from cash to accrual accounting and establish foundational accounting policies. Financial Operations: Own the monthly close, bookkeeping, and the production of timely, accurate financial statements and management reporting.

Systems Management: Oversee the accounting configuration of our finance stack, including managing integration logic (e.g., Ramp/QuickBooks). Process Building: Create and document repeatable processes for accrual-basis bookkeeping and general financial workflow. Oversight & Mentorship: Manage AR/AP processes, including mentoring a Shared Services Associate to handle AP execution and expand into broader staff-accounting duties

Compliance: Coordinate with their external CPA for periodic review and tax compliance. Qualifications Experience: 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a proven track record in a Controller or head-of-accounting capacity. Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting (or a related field).

Technical Requirement: Must have personal, hands-on experience executing a cash-to-accrual accounting conversion and strong overall knowledge of accounting principles and practices. Proficiency in QuickBooks and experience with modern spend/AP platforms (e.g., Ramp) is required. Licensure: CPA license preferred

Mindset: You are a "builder" who thrives in a hands-on environment. You are comfortable working in a fast-moving operation where you are the primary finance function and partner closely with operations leadership. Tactical & Strategic: A "roll-up-your-sleeves" mindset is essential.

You must be comfortable managing the daily transactional details while maintaining the ability to think strategically about scaling the finance function. Operations Mindset: A strong understanding of operational finance is critical, specifically within a high-volume, inventory-heavy, or logistics environment. Communication: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with both internal stakeholders and external partners.

Benefits ZonPrep offers a competitive benefits package, including employer-paid health benefits covering 85% of premiums, a 401(k) plan with company match, and Paid Time Off (PTO).
