What are some typical projects or collaborations an interdisciplinary designer might be involved in?

Interdisciplinary Designers often work on projects that require combining skills and knowledge from different fields, such as developing user-centered products that integrate digital, physical, and environmental design. They frequently collaborate with professionals from engineering, marketing, business strategy, and software development to create holistic solutions. This often means working in cross-functional teams, participating in brainstorming sessions, and helping translate ideas into actionable prototypes or final products. Such projects can include everything from designing wearable technology and interactive installations to improving user journeys in digital platforms, offering variety and constant opportunities for creative problem-solving.

What kind of job can I get with an interdisciplinary design degree?

An interdisciplinary design degree prepares individuals for roles such as UX/UI designer, product designer, or creative director, often requiring skills in visual communication, problem-solving, and proficiency with design tools like Adobe Creative Suite or CAD software. Graduates can work in industries including technology, manufacturing, or marketing, often collaborating across teams to develop innovative solutions. Certification in specific design methods or project management can enhance job prospects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the interdisciplinary design position, and why are they important?

To excel in Interdisciplinary Design, you need a strong background in design thinking, problem-solving, and expertise in at least one core design discipline (such as graphic, industrial, or interaction design) complemented by a relevant degree. Familiarity with design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, CAD programs), project management tools, and sometimes certifications like UX/UI credentials are commonly expected. Excellent communication, collaboration, and creative adaptability are vital soft skills, enabling you to bridge gaps between fields and teams. These skills are crucial as interdisciplinary designers often unite diverse perspectives to develop innovative solutions across complex, multifaceted projects.

What is an interdisciplinary designer?

An interdisciplinary designer is a professional who integrates knowledge and skills from multiple design disciplines, such as graphic, product, and user experience design, to create cohesive solutions. They often collaborate across fields, use various tools like CAD or Adobe Creative Suite, and adapt to different project requirements to address complex problems.

Job description

About the Team:

The Integrated Performance team owns the holistic view of how Terran R comes together, ensuring that every system on the vehicle and ground is capable of achieving our ambitious objectives. The team works across the full launch system, from trajectory design and aerodynamics to reliability analysis and beyond, with direct influence on all parts of the product lifecycle, from conceptual design to post-flight data review. Beyond analysis, team members engage hands-on with hardware and operations, with the mission and authority to drive meaningful programmatic change. With a unique organizational structure, the integrated performance team spans multiple technical domains and embeds directly with partner teams to solve the hardest multi-disciplinary problems. The team operates with a rare scale: large enough to support complex development, yet small enough that individual contributors have meaningful impact.

About the Role:

  • Closely collaborate with key design teams to integrate the latest design data into full simulations of customer missions
  • Develop and leverage software tooling to optimize launch and orbital trajectories across key customer missions
  • Lead interdisciplinary design trade analyses to inform critical decisions about the vehicle, mission trajectories, and ConOps
  • Define and maintain high-level vehicle and trajectory design requirements to inform the overall design process
  • Implement, maintain, and improve software tooling across a variety of languages, from core simulation capabilities to peripheral analysis utilities
  • Establish and lead cross-functional collaboration with key teams across Vehicle Engineering

About You:

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree (BS/MS/PhD) in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field
  • 2+ years of relevant full-time work experience with demonstrated ability to solve complex problems from first principles
  • Direct experience on rocketry, space systems, or equally complex hardware systems
  • Strong proficiency in high-level programming languages (e.g. Python, Julia, MATLAB) and setting up complex simulation processes
  • Ability to complete projects with end-to-end ownership and a high degree of independence
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and intense startup environment

Nice to haves but not required:

  • Familiarity with launch vehicle trajectory design and optimization
  • Have previously been a leading contributor on complex multi-disciplinary engineering analysis projects
  • Prior work in a startup environment
  • Experience working with advanced software development practices such as Docker, Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD), and dependency management
