What can you do with an interactive design degree?

An interactive design degree prepares individuals for roles such as user experience (UX) designer, user interface (UI) designer, web designer, or multimedia artist. Graduates can work in digital media, app development, advertising, or software companies, utilizing skills in design tools like Adobe Creative Suite and prototyping software. The degree often involves understanding human-computer interaction and may require a portfolio to demonstrate design skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interactive designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interactive Designer, you need a strong background in visual design, user experience (UX), and proficiency with design principles, often supported by a degree in design or related fields. Familiarity with design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Sketch, and prototyping platforms is typically required. Creativity, collaboration, and effective communication are essential soft skills to excel in this role. These skills ensure engaging, user-friendly digital experiences that meet both user needs and business objectives.

How does an interactive designer typically collaborate with developers and other team members during a project?

Interactive Designers work closely with developers, UX researchers, and product managers throughout the project lifecycle. They often participate in brainstorming sessions, share design prototypes, and gather feedback to refine user experiences. Regular meetings and collaborative tools help ensure that design concepts are technically feasible and align with project goals. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as Interactive Designers may need to adjust their designs based on technical constraints or user testing results.

What does an interactive design do?

An interactive designer creates engaging digital experiences by designing interfaces, user interactions, and visual elements for websites, apps, or multimedia projects. They use tools like Adobe XD or Figma and focus on usability, user experience, and visual appeal to ensure effective communication and functionality. Their work often involves collaboration with developers and clients to meet project goals.

What is interactive design?

Interactive design is a field focused on creating engaging interfaces and experiences that allow users to interact with digital products, such as websites, apps, and software. It involves designing the elements, behaviors, and workflows to ensure the product is intuitive, user-friendly, and meets the needs of its audience. Interactive designers use principles from user experience (UX), visual design, and technology to craft responsive and meaningful interactions. The goal is to enhance usability and create memorable digital experiences.

Job description

Prophetic Software is not able to sponsor employment visas now or in the future. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship to be considered for this role.

About Prophetic:

Real estate development is a multi-billion-dollar industry that has run on fragmented data, manual processes, and gut instinct for decades. Prophetic is changing that. We're building the AI-native platform that enables homebuilders, developers, and investors to find, analyze, and act on land opportunities from a single system โ€” powered by proprietary technologies that process billions of data points across all 50 states. We are the market leader in our space, and our customers don't just use the product โ€” they love it. We're not making teams more efficient. We're changing how they operate.

Prophetic is scaling fast โ€” demand is outpacing our ability to hire, and we're just getting started. This is a once-in-a-lifetime team: sharp, low ego, deeply collaborative, and obsessed with building the best product in the industry. Come disrupt an industry with us.

We are looking for a hands-on software engineer who can turn complex geometric, spatial, and procedural ideas into polished, usable products. This is a builder role for someone equally comfortable with algorithms, implementation detail, and the creative judgment required to ship original technical work.

You will help develop interactive, AI-enabled software and developer-facing tools where spatial reasoning, geometry, or procedural systems are central to the product experience.

What you'll do:
  • Design and implement procedural, geometric, or spatial algorithms for real product use.

  • Build and ship original software, developer tools, and interactive technical experiences.

  • Work across product and infrastructure concerns, from algorithm design and prototyping through reliable release-quality implementation.

  • Explore practical applications of AI in creative tools, local-first workflows, voice interfaces, 3D experiences, or desktop software.

  • Collaborate closely with product and design partners while retaining strong ownership of technical decisions.

  • Improve the clarity, usability, and documentation of the tools and systems you build.

What we're looking for:
  • Current or recent hands-on software development experience.

  • Demonstrated implementation experience with procedural generation, computational geometry, spatial systems, geometry processing, rendering, navigation, physics, or closely related algorithms.

  • A track record of shipping software, not only researching or advising on it.

  • Evidence of independent technical ownership, such as public projects, developer tools, prototypes that became usable releases, or substantial product contributions.

  • Comfort working in a small, fast-moving environment as a strong individual contributor or player-coach.

Especially relevant backgrounds:

Any of the following can be a strong route into the role:

  • Game development, particularly procedural generation, graphics, physics, navigation, rendering, or world-building systems.

  • Computational design, automated CAD, parametric modeling, or geometry-processing work.

  • Academic or applied work in computational geometry, graphics, spatial computing, or related algorithmic fields.

  • Interactive 3D, creative-technology, desktop-application, speech, or AI-enabled developer-tooling projects.

Helpful technical experience:
  • JavaScript or TypeScript, Python, and modern desktop or interactive graphics tooling.

  • 3D engines, graphics libraries, CAD or geometry kernels, mapping/spatial frameworks, or simulation environments.

  • Local-first software, developer platforms, or AI-assisted workflows.

  • Clear technical writing, project documentation, and product-minded release discipline.

What success looks like:

In this role, you will make difficult spatial or procedural problems feel straightforward for users. You will bring sound algorithmic judgment, practical engineering craft, and the instinct to turn a promising technical idea into a working product.

Why Prophetic:

  • The team. Wide expertise, sharp, low ego, and genuinely fun to work with. We have each other's backs and we celebrate wins together.

  • Real ownership and impact from day one. Our customers make million-dollar decisions on our platform. Your work matters immediately.

  • AI-native product and AI-native workflows. Every team โ€” engineering, sales, operations โ€” runs on AI tooling daily.

  • Founder-led transparency. Leadership shares the financials, the strategy, and the hard calls with the whole team.

  • High growth, high demand. The product works, customers love it, and we are hiring to keep up. No shortage of opportunity here.

  • Flexibility. Remote, hybrid, or in-office with a great Portland, OR headquarters.

  • Self-starters who thrive in ambiguity. We're a startup. If you need someone to tell you what to do every morning, this isn't the place; if you come alive solving hard problems with smart people, it is.

Benefits (US-based Full-time):

  • 100% medical, dental & vision insurance coverage for you; 30% coverage for dependents

  • Competitive salary and meaningful early-stage equity

  • Unlimited PTO

  • Hybrid/Remote stipend

  • In-office perks: snacks, drinks, coffee, ping-pong table, and more โ€” plus cuddles from Olive, our in-office Doberman!

  • Budget for intra-office travel

  • 2โ€“3 annual team meetups in person

How We Work:

These four themes are how we think, build, and lead:

  • Truth โ€” Say the hard thing. We speak plainly, flag problems early, and share what's actually going on.

  • Precision โ€” Sign your name to it. Our customers make million-dollar decisions on our data. We get the details right.

  • Velocity โ€” Speed compounds. Waiting doesn't. We ship daily and launch features every two to three weeks.

  • Ownership โ€” Own it, then solve it. We own outcomes, not tasks. If something's broken, we fix it.

EEO:

Prophetic Software is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees and applicants, and we make employment decisions without regard to race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, veteran or military status, marital status, or any other characteristic protected under applicable federal, state, or local law. We actively seek to build a diverse team and encourage candidates from underrepresented backgrounds to apply. Reasonable accommodations are available upon request for qualified individuals with disabilities throughout the application and employment process.
