INTERA Incorporated is seeking a skilled and motivated Senior Civil, Environmental, Chemical, or Geological Engineer to join our Albuquerque, New Mexico, office. This position offers an exciting opportunity to lead and support technically challenging projects for a diverse range of clients, including state and municipal agencies, mining companies, and private industry partners that share our commitment to environmental stewardship and technical excellence. This role will contribute to the planning, design, and implementation of remediation, reclamation, and environmental characterization projects that help clients address complex environmental challenges, meet regulatory requirements, and sustainably manage natural resources.


The ideal candidate is a collaborative problem-solver who enjoys balancing technical work, project leadership, and client engagement. Responsibilities may include developing remedial strategies, leading environmental investigations, evaluating treatment system performance, supporting mine reclamation and closure efforts, and providing technical guidance on contaminated site management. The position also offers opportunities to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, mentor junior staff, manage client relationships, and contribute to business growth and project delivery. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead remediation, reclamation, and environmental engineering projects
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, deliverables, and client communications
  • Develop technical reports, remedial designs, feasibility studies, and optimization evaluations
  • Design and oversee environmental field investigations and monitoring programs
  • Support mine waste, tailings management, closure, and reclamation projects
  • Develop conceptual site models and support risk assessment activities
  • Prepare design drawings, specifications, and construction documents
  • Mentor junior staff and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams
  • Support business development and cultivate client relationships

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Civil, Environmental, Chemical, or Geological Engineering, or a related field
  • 15+ years of relevant professional experience
  • Demonstrated experience managing environmental or engineering projects or tasks
  • Prior experience in all engineering stages of design-build projects, including feasibility studies, conceptual designs, development of construction drawings and specifications, engineering cost estimates, construction quality assurance, and record document development
  • Strong technical writing, data analysis, verbal and graphic communication, and project management skills.
  • Field experience with sample collection and construction oversight
  • Experience with site reclamation, remediation technologies, and environmental compliance.
  • Familiarity with state and federal environmental regulations (e.g., RCRA, CERCLA, NMED/NMAC, EPA) and risk-based criteria
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional engineering licensure
  • Masterโ€™s degree in engineering, hydrology, or a related field
  • Experience with mining reclamation, groundwater remediation, soil vapor extraction, contaminated site investigations, or landfill design and permitting in the Southwest U.S.
  • Experience with landfill construction QA/QC and certification, landfill gas management, drilling oversight, BMP selection, and SWPPP development
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D for grading plans, utility design drawings, and sheet set management
  • Knowledge of HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, HELP, air quality regulations, and environmental permitting
  • Experience with GIS tools and applications, SCADA, groundwater/surface water/vadose zone modeling, statistical methods, environmental chemistry, or contaminant fate and transport
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and/or MSHA training
