Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Technician

Job Description

This position will require working with a technician to obtain knowledge on the installation and troubleshooting of transportation systems.  The transportation systems will include: copper cabling, fiber optic cable backbones, cameras, CCTV, digital message signs, vehicle detection systems, L2 and L3 switches, LAN/WAN, specialty software packages, IP configurations, etc.

PREREQUISITE REQUIREMENTS:

A minimum of 5 years of knowledge of ITS Highway Communication including:

  • Local Area (LAN) & Wide Area Network (WAN) communications including, but not limited to, Internet Protocol (IP) addressing; 802.3 and 802.11 with an overall basic understanding of how networks function.
  • CCTV: Closed Circuit Television basics and camera operations. Including Power-over-Ethernet (POE), Wireless and Cellular technology,
  • DMS: Dynamic Message Sign - basic understanding of DMS operations and communication protocols.
  • FIBER: Understanding of fiber optic principles including splice-loss, Singlemode vs multimode differences, OTDR, Fusion splicing and the different fiber connectors (ST, SC, LC, etc.)

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Copper cable troubleshooting, repair, or replacement & certification
  • Fiber optic cable troubleshooting, repair, or replacement & certification
  • CCTV camera troubleshooting, repairs, or replacement & activation
  • Dynamic Message Sign troubleshooting, component repairs and replacement
  • Vehicle detection systems (both radar and infrared)
  • Other systems associated with highway ITS devices.
  • Occasionally assist with other Traffic and Signalization tasks and on-site work duties.
  • Perform reasonable additional duties and tasks determined by management.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years-of-age or older.
  • A driver's license is required. 
  • Self-driven and willing to learn.
  • Comfortable using a computer and internet
  • Both “web based” and local Microsoft Office software.
  • Comfortable working outside in Houston with the various weather conditions that entails.

Education & Experience:

  • Extensive knowledge of electronics and networking preferred, but not required.
  • Experience reading plans and specifications preferred.

Pre-Screen:

  • Upon offer, employees may be required to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, background and/or MVR check.

License & Certifications:

  • A Driver's license is required. 
  • Certifications for the systems noted above are not required, but considered a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • RARE (less than 10%): climbing poles.
  • OCCASIONAL (up to 33%): sitting, kneeling, crawling, climbing ladders, climbing stairs.
  • FREQUENT (up to 66%): stooping, squatting, body-twisting, climbing on/off truck, gripping, reading, bucket truck operations with elevated heights of 70-feet.
  • CONTINUOUS (up to 100%): manual dexterity, standing, walking, sense of touch, speaking clearly, seeing distant, lifting over 10 lbs. to 50 lbs., seeing, reaching, range of motion, hearing-speech range, depth perception, color vision, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, balancing, lifting up to 10 lbs., lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • OTHER (sporadic) travel outside of the Houston METRO area, comfortable with elevated heights of 70-feet.
