Job description

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Technician 1, 2 or 3 

Classification Title: Traffic Systems Technician 1, 2 or 3 (C22, C24 or C26) 

Location: 22211 US Highway 19 N, Clearwater, FL 33765 

Do you have experience in transportation infrastructure maintenance and operations, roadway or utilities construction, or telecommunications? If so, Pinellas County is seeking motivated and experienced professionals to support maintenance, and operations of its Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), including our fiber optic cable system, roadway cameras, and roadside electronic message signs.  

The ITS Technician performs routine maintenance and troubleshooting of critical transportation infrastructure systems that support traffic operations, safety, and communications including underground fiber optics, network field switches, and cellular modems. 

This position offers excellent career advancement opportunities for motivated candidates with backgrounds in traffic operations, electrical, electronics, networking, and telecommunications.

What Will You Do?

  • Constructs and maintains transportation facilities including installation of underground conduit, pull boxes, traffic cabinets, concrete foundations, traffic poles, electric load centers, terminal blocks and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) equipment; 

  • Assists with installation, repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, programming, and fabrication of all traffic signal systems, fiber optic, and network communications assets in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), State and County standards; 

  • Services Intelligent Transportation System devices including Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV), Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), fiber optic networks and network field switches; 

  • Assists with wiring cabinets and installing, maintaining, and repairing computer interface equipment and programming digitized controllers; 

  • Locates and maps fiber-optic communications network using GIS; 

  • Assists with set-up, programming and installing network components in the field or the traffic management center; 

  • Ability to set up computer workstations for operators in the Traffic Management Center including any new software applications used to monitor field equipment. 

  • Completes daily reports on all field activities, dispatched calls, work orders, and service requests utilizing computer work order system; 

  • Learns how to interpret blueprints, schematics, engineering plans, GIS maps, and technical manuals; 

  • Learns to set up work zones for job sites in accordance with MUTCD, State, and County standards;

  • Identifies, reports, and corrects visibility obstructions that pose traffic hazards; 

  • Maintains stock levels on trucks per the supervisor's direction and restocks as necessary; 

  • Maintains an inventory of maintenance and operational supplies, tools, equipment, etc., and services them on a routine basis; 

  • Performs pre-work inspections on vehicles and equipment; 

  • Informs supervisor of potential hazards, problem areas, citizen inquiries, and all work activities; 

  • Adheres to personnel, safety, and departmental policies and procedures; 

  • May be required to assist with special events in the areas of traffic control; 

  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

What Will You Need?

Education and Experience:       

ITS Technician 1 (Traffic Systems Technician 1) Salary Range:  $22.99 - $29.89 per hour:

  • A high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required. Must have good knowledge of personal computer (PC) and tablet operations. One (1) year experience in electrical, electronics, telecommunications, networking, traffic signal maintenance or intelligent transportation systems; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience. 

ITS Technician 2 (Traffic Systems Technician 2) Salary Range:  $25.12 - $32.65 per hour

  • A high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required. Must have good knowledge of personal computer (PC) and tablet operations. Two (2) years of experience in electrical, electronics, telecommunications, networking, traffic signal maintenance or intelligent transportation systems; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience. 

ITS Technician 3 (Traffic Systems Technician 3) Salary Range:  $27.43 - $35.66 per hour

  • A high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required. Must have good knowledge of personal computer (PC) and tablet operations. Five (5) years of work experience performing traffic signal and/or Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) installation, repair, and maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience. 

Additional Requirements: 

  • ITS Tech 1: Must obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Level I Certification within one (1) year of hire. 

  • ITS Tech 2 & 3: Certification in Fiber Optic Cable Splicing, Testing, and Termination from an approved provider such as IMSA or the FOA. 

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver's License.

  • Must be able to obtain Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Clearance. 

  • Obtain Florida Department of Transportation Maintenance of Traffic Certification. 

  • Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
