Insurtech, short for insurance technology, refers to the innovative use of technology to improve and streamline the insurance industry. This includes leveraging artificial intelligence, big data, mobile apps, and other digital tools to enhance customer experience, speed up claims processing, and create new insurance products. Insurtech companies often focus on making insurance more accessible, affordable, and personalized for consumers, while also helping insurers operate more efficiently. The sector is rapidly evolving and is transforming traditional insurance models.

What are Insurtech jobs?

Insurtech jobs focus on the engineering of software and hardware, the collection and analysis of data, the implementation of cybersecurity, and the development of apps for insurance companies. The duties of IT and software professionals in the Insurtech industry depend on their area of specialization. The responsibilities of a data scientist, for example, revolve around analyzing data that they collect from smartphone apps, tracking devices, and wearables. Hardware and software engineers create these devices and apps and develop their data collection capacity and user interfaces. Software and web developers work on insurance sites and e-marketing tools for insurance companies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an Insurtech role, and why are they important?

To excel in an Insurtech role, you typically need a strong background in insurance concepts, data analytics, and business or computer science, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with insurance management systems, cloud platforms, and programming languages like Python or SQL, as well as certifications such as CPCU or IT-related credentials, is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication set top performers apart, especially when bridging gaps between technical and business teams. These skills are vital for driving digital transformation, ensuring regulatory compliance, and delivering innovative solutions in a rapidly evolving insurance marketplace.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working in Insurtech roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Insurtech roles often encounter challenges such as navigating complex regulatory requirements, integrating new technologies with legacy insurance systems, and fostering collaboration between technical teams and traditional insurance experts. Addressing these challenges requires continuous learning about the evolving regulatory landscape, strong communication skills to bridge knowledge gaps between teams, and a proactive approach to change management. Many Insurtech teams benefit from agile methodologies and cross-disciplinary collaboration to drive innovation while maintaining compliance and client trust.

Within this organization, the InsurTech team builds and scales insurance, protection, and assurance products that help travelers book with confidence and peace of mind while creating new value for Expedia Group and its partners.

As a Mobile Engineer III, iOS, you will help build and scale traveler protection solutions across flights, lodging, rental cars, and emerging value-added services.

In this role, you will own the iOS experience for products that span critical customer touchpoints, including shopping, checkout, confirmation, post-booking, and self-service experiences. You will work closely with product managers, designers, backend engineers, and insurance partners to bring new offerings to market and expand existing products across Expedia Group brands and global points of sale.

This is a highly collaborative and impactful role where you will operate with significant ownership and autonomy. You'll partner with a distributed mobile engineering community across multiple geographies while serving as a key iOS expert for the InsurTech team. Success in this role requires strong technical execution, the ability to manage multiple initiatives in parallel, and a passion for solving complex customer and business challenges through high-quality mobile experiences.

In This Role, You Will:
  • Design, build, and maintain native iOS applications that are secure, performant, and resilient using modern iOS frameworks and best practices
  • Translate product and experience requirements into clear technical designs (LLD, API design, data models)
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with backend, product, design, and quality teams to deliver end-to-end customer journeys
  • Write clean, testable, and observable code; contribute to automated testing, monitoring, and code reviews
  • Diagnose and resolve complex production issues, improving application reliability and performance
  • Safely integrate and operate AI/ML-enabled solutions while maintaining privacy and security standards
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or 5 years of equivalent practical experience
  • Professional experience shipping native iOS applications with ownership from design through production
  • Strong iOS architecture, low-level design, API integration, and data modeling experience
  • Proficiency with iOS tools, frameworks, testing, observability, and operational best practices
  • Experience collaborating across cross-functional teams and stakeholders to deliver mobile features across multiple products or domains
  • Demonstrated ability to independently drive projects from requirements through production with minimal supervision
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience designing and scaling complex iOS architectures (modularization, performance, offline support)
  • Proven delivery of high-impact iOS features across multiple domains
  • Strong focus on operational excellence (instrumentation, monitoring, alerting, incident resolution)
  • Experience working in large-scale platforms or shared codebases where solutions span multiple teams and customer journeys
  • Experience integrating AI/ML-enabled capabilities into mobile apps securely and responsibly
  • Experience balancing and delivering multiple projects or feature initiatives simultaneously
  • Familiarity with AI-driven development tools and applying AI/ML concepts to improve product quality and developer efficiency
