Job description

Memphis Mechanical, a TAG company is seeking a Lead Carpenter / Case Setter for commercial and supermarket refrigeration construction projects in and around the Memphis, TN area.

Role Summary:

The Lead Carpenter / Case Setter is responsible for the installation, removal, and setup of refrigerated display cases, walk-in coolers, and related mechanical equipment in commercial and supermarket environments. This role supports new construction, remodels, and equipment upgrades while ensuring installations meet project specifications, safety standards, and quality expectations. The Lead Carpenter / Case Setter may also provide direction to crew members to support project efficiency and scheduling.


Roles and Responsibilities:

• Receive, uncrate, inspect, and stage refrigerated cases, walk-in coolers, rack systems, and conventional refrigeration units
• Demo existing walk-in coolers, refrigerated cases, and associated mechanical systems
• Install new refrigerated display cases and walk-in coolers per project drawings and specifications
• Read and interpret refrigeration, electrical, and plumbing blueprints
• Verify materials conform to stock lists and construction drawings
• Measure and verify accuracy of installations using precision measuring tools
• Fabricate and install Unistrut hangers and support systems
• Properly hang evaporator coils and install thermostatic expansion valves (TXVs)
• Install PVC drain piping for refrigeration systems
• Coordinate with Service and Construction Managers to support productivity and project schedules
• Lead and support crew members to ensure quality workmanship and safe jobsite practices
• Safely climb ladders, work at elevated heights, and lift materials up to 50 pounds


Skills and Qualifications:

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in refrigeration construction, carpentry, or case setting
• Experience installing refrigerated cases and walk-in coolers in supermarket or commercial environments
• Strong ability to read and follow blueprints and project drawings
• Experience leading others and working independently or as part of a team
• Strong communication skills with customers, management, and crew members
• Solid organizational skills and ability to prioritize short-term work schedules
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
• Willingness to travel, work overnight, and work overtime as required

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with supermarket refrigeration systems
• Welding experience
• Sheet metal experience
• Experience installing evaporator coils and mechanical refrigeration components
• Prior leadership or lead installer experience
