Insurance Gis information

What is an Insurance GIS professional?

Insurance GIS professionals are specialists who use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze spatial data related to insurance risks, claims, and policies. They help insurance companies assess risk factors like natural disasters, crime rates, and demographic trends by mapping and interpreting geographic data. This analysis supports informed decision-making for underwriting, pricing, and responding to claims. Insurance GIS experts often work closely with actuaries, underwriters, and risk managers to enhance overall business strategies.

How does an Insurance GIS professional typically collaborate with underwriting and claims teams?

Insurance GIS professionals play a key role in supporting underwriting and claims teams by providing spatial data analysis and mapping insights. They frequently work alongside underwriters to assess geographic risk factors, such as flood zones or crime rates, that impact policy decisions. During claims processes, GIS experts help visualize incident locations and analyze spatial patterns of claims, enabling faster and more informed decision-making. This collaboration often involves regular meetings, sharing data visualizations, and responding to ad-hoc data requests from colleagues across departments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Insurance GIS specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance GIS Specialist, you need expertise in geographic information systems (GIS), spatial analysis, data management, and a degree in geography, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency in GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS, as well as experience with data visualization and mapping tools, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for accurately assessing risk, making data-driven decisions, and effectively supporting underwriting and claims processes in the insurance industry.

What is the difference between Insurance Gis vs Insurance Underwriter?

  • Gather requirements, facilitate discussions, and recommend scalable GIS and data workflows.

  • Take ownership of assignments from discovery through implementation.
  • Continuously develop technical expertise while expanding consulting and client engagement skills.
  • Share knowledge and contribute to standards and best practices.
  • Pursue opportunities to grow into technical leadership and solution architecture roles.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of GIS or related technology experience.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, or comparable enterprise GIS platforms.
  • Experience working with relational databases and data management concepts.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Preferred
  • Experience with Python, SQL, Arcade, JavaScript, or other scripting languages.
  • Experience integrating GIS with enterprise business systems.
  • Familiarity with Power BI, Power Automate, FME, or ETL workflows.
  • Experience supporting infrastructure, utilities, transportation, or municipal clients.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms, digital delivery, or asset management systems.
Why BGE?
Our Enterprise Technology team is helping reshape how infrastructure organizations use data. From enterprise GIS and asset management to automation, analytics, and digital delivery, we partner with clients to solve complex challenges using modern technology. You'll work alongside engineers, developers, data scientists, and technology consultants on projects that have a lasting impact on communities across Texas and beyond.
If you're looking for a role where you can grow beyond traditional GIS, influence how technology is applied to infrastructure, and help define the future of digital delivery, we'd love to talk with you.
