Are you our next Surety Claims Intern?
About Our Surety Claims Team
Our team conducts investigations and analysis of commercial and contract surety claims of all levels of severity and complexity. Success on our team requires excellent writing, analytical and negotiation skills and a desire to develop efficient claim resolutions in accordance with Nationwide's bonded obligations.
Our team also provides timely and competent business support advice to Nationwide surety underwriters based upon potential claims related risks associated with current and potential surety obligations.
A day in the life of a Surety Claims Intern might include:
โ€ข Review of new and existing surety claim demands from claimants and/or their legal counsel.
โ€ข Review and analysis of bond terms and conditions as well as review and analysis of documentation submitted by claimants in support of surety bond claims.
โ€ข Review and discussion of surety bond principal's position related to claims and factual and/or legal analysis of surety's potential defenses and obligations regarding the claim.
โ€ข Management of outside legal counsel and review of draft legal pleadings to be filed on behalf of Nationwide related to litigation involving Nationwide issued surety bonds.
โ€ข Determines necessary steps to process work. Makes preliminary determination on validity of claims and makes recommendations to management regarding possible resolution or mitigation of claim exposure consistent with Nationwide's bonded liability pursuant to applicable law and terms and conditions of the surety bond.
About You
A successful Surety Claims Intern at Nationwide has:
Education
โ€ข Pursuing Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school
โ€ข Involvement in student activities and/or some work experience
Skills/Competencies
โ€ข General understanding of basic analytical and financial techniques preferred.
โ€ข Verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with all levels of internal and external contacts.
โ€ข Ability to evaluate and recommend solutions to work-related problems.
โ€ข Strong analytical skills
โ€ข Effective time management skills and competencies preferred.
Nationwide does not participate in the Stem OPT Extension program. At its sole discretion, Nationwide determines whether to offer sponsorship for qualifying positions based on business need and budget. However, it is not usually available for entry level roles.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment.
