Job description

Energy Insurance Mutual (EIM) is a member-owned mutual insurance company serving the utility and energy services industry. For four decades, EIM has provided specialized insurance solutions, financial strength, and responsive service to its Members through a relationship-driven, long-term approach to risk management.

EIM is seeking a Claims Director to lead the day-to-day operations of our Claims Department and oversee the management of primarily complex commercial property and casualty claims. EIM has a small portfolio of D&O, Fiduciary and Cyber claims. This is a highly visible leadership opportunity for an experienced claims manager who wants to move beyond a traditional claims environment and into a financially strong, member-owned mutual built on long-term relationships, technical excellence, and responsive service to utilities and the energy services industry.

Based in Tampa, Florida (relocation assistance provided), this role offers the opportunity to lead a talented Claims team, partner closely with executive leadership and cross-functional business partners, and work directly with Members, reinsurers, outside counsel, and other key stakeholders on complex claims matters.

Why this opportunity is different

  • Join a member-owned mutual where claims decisions are guided by long-term Member value, stability, and trusted relationships.
  • Step into a meaningful leadership role with influence over claims operations, team development, complex claim strategy, and continuous improvement.
  • Work with sophisticated Members in the utility and energy sector on complex commercial claims, litigation, coverage, reserve, and reinsurance matters.
  • Collaborate closely with executive leadership, Finance, Underwriting, Actuarial, Member Companies, reinsurers, outside counsel, and other business partners.
  • Enjoy the professional opportunity and lifestyle benefits of living and working in Tampa, Florida with a company that offers strong benefits, a beautiful office environment, and a great team of employees.

What you will do

  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop Claims professionals and support staff while fostering a collaborative, high-performing team environment.
  • Manage departmental performance by monitoring key performance indicators, conducting file audits, and supporting adherence to EIMโ€™s claims handling best practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and oversight on complex claims, litigation strategy, coverage analysis, reserve adequacy, and claim resolution.
  • Review coverage correspondence, litigation strategy, reserve recommendations, and significant claim decisions prepared by Claims staff.
  • Partner with the Vice President & Chief Claims Officer to prepare reserve analyses, claims trend reporting, executive presentations, and Board and Claims Committee materials.
  • Collaborate with Underwriting, Actuarial, Finance, and executive leadership to improve claims outcomes, underwriting feedback, and enterprise risk management initiatives.
  • Oversee communications with reinsurers regarding claim developments, recoverables, audits, and reporting requirements.
  • Participate in annual panel counsel evaluations and support compliance with billing guidelines and outside counsel performance expectations.
  • Represent EIM during Member meetings, presentations, industry events, and other business activities.

What we are ideally looking for

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • 10+ years of claims handling experience, including complex commercial property and casualty claims.
  • 5+ years of leadership or claims management experience.
  • Active license to practice law and membership in good standing with a state bar preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of commercial property and casualty claims handling, litigation management, and insurance coverage analysis.
  • Strong leadership experience with the ability to coach, mentor, and develop high-performing teams.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, negotiation, problem-solving, communication, and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with Members, reinsurers, outside counsel, and internal stakeholders.
  • Commercial property and casualty insurance experience required; demonstrated technical expertise in claims handling and claims operations preferred.

Featured benefits

Strong compensation package plus comprehensive insurance benefits, relocation assistance (where applicable), STD, LTD, 401(k) with company match and contribution, hybrid work environment, cell phone stipend, fitness reimbursement, tuition reimbursement, professional development support, and more.

Work environment

This is a full-time, exempt role with a hybrid work environment with a three day (T, W, Th) in-office presence in Tampa, Florida. Travel is expected approximately 15โ€“20% of the time to support Member meetings, mediations, conferences, business meetings, and professional development.
