Job Summary

The Medical Assistant (MA) operates within the established scope of practice guidelines as defined by state regulations. In an ambulatory care environment, the MA gathers both subjective and objective health information from patients or their caregivers and relays this information to healthcare providers. The role involves contributing to patient care by supplying relevant data to licensed professionals and executing the patient's care plan as directed by the provider. The MA is responsible for communicating the provider's written care instructions to patients or caregivers, ensuring that specific information is conveyed accurately. This position encompasses care for patients of all ages, covering all aspects of preventive care, health maintenance, treatment, and follow-up as patients transition through various care settings. Under the direct supervision of a licensed medical professional, the MA performs a range of clinical tasks, including but not limited to obtaining vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, observing and reporting symptoms, and conducting point-of-care testing.

Qualifications
  • Medical Assistant Ambulatory, Non-Certified:
    • Must have graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant program or completed equivalent courses (Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Pharmacology) within 12 months of hire.
    • Two years of experience as a Medical Assistant is required if educational qualifications are not met at the time of hiring.
    • Previous experience in a healthcare environment is preferred.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must be obtained within six months of employment, with re-certification as necessary.
  • Medical Assistant Ambulatory:
    • Must be a graduate of a recognized Medical Assistant program.
    • Prior experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
    • Must hold national certification or registration as a Medical Assistant (MA).
    • Certification (CMA) must be obtained through a nationally recognized program, such as the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
    • Registration (RMA) through the American Medical Technologists (AMT) is also acceptable.
    • Additional state-specific requirements include North Dakota (ND) registration as an MAIII through the ND Board of Nursing, with a four-month period granted to obtain registration if not held at the time of hire. Medication administration prior to obtaining MAIII registration must be supervised by a licensed nurse. Additionally, registration on the ND Board of Nursing UAP Registry is required if MAIII registration is not held at the time of hire.
    • Medical Assistants in Minnesota (MN), Iowa (IA), South Dakota (SD), and Oregon (OR) do not require state registration.
    • BLS certification is required within six months of employment, with re-certification as necessary.
