Job description

Hello, we’re Instrumentl.

Nonprofits do some of the most important work in the world, and most of them are still managing grants in spreadsheets. We're fixing that.

Instrumentl is a profitable, hypergrowth, YC-backed SaaS platform building the operating system for grant-funded organizations. More than 5,500 nonprofits use Instrumentl to discover, track, and win grant funding, from local community organizations to the San Diego Zoo and the University of Alaska. Collectively they’ve moved over $1 billion through our platform.

We're growing quickly, customers love us (check out our G2 reviews!), and we're hiring people who want to build something that matters.

About the role:

You’ll be a Senior Full Stack Engineer reporting to our Head of Engineering, working across design, product, content, and support to deliver a best-in-class experience to every user. On a small, distributed team that owns the product, support, and data stack end to end, you'll build and improve both customer-facing products and internal tooling, own problems from ideation through shipped and reliable solutions, and help set the quality bar for the engineers who join after you. We're an AI-forward team that invests heavily in modern tooling and expects engineers to use it with strong judgment, staying the author and owner of their work rather than outsourcing it to the tools. If you want broad ownership and real impact at a profitable, fast-growing company rather than a narrow slice at a larger one, this is that seat.

What you'll do: Build & Ship
  • Build, operate, and improve products for every Instrumentl customer, from small local nonprofits to large organizations
  • Create responsive interfaces and APIs that drive customer adoption and retention
  • Contribute high-quality, thoroughly tested code across resilient backends and trustworthy user interfaces
  • Own problems end to end, managing complexity from ideation through shipped, reliable solutions
  • Use AI tooling with judgment to move faster while owning the quality, correctness, and long-term maintainability of what you ship
Partner & Elevate
  • Partner with product, sales, support, and content to improve internal tools and processes
  • Act as a strategic partner, weighing business impact, reliability, and the detail of every customer interaction
  • Uphold Instrumentl's quality standards and mentor newer engineers to the same bar
What we're looking for: Required
  • 7+ years as a software engineer building and shipping production software
  • Generalist range: comfortable moving across frontend, backend, infrastructure, and data or billing pipelines as the work demands
  • Deep, hands-on experience with Ruby on Rails in production: this is our primary stack and where you'll spend most of your time
  • Working fluency across Python, JavaScript, PostgreSQL, Redis, and HTML/CSS, with an openness to adopting new tools
  • A track record of owning problems end to end and delivering them from ideation to completion
Nice to have
  • Startup or early-stage experience
  • Experience mentoring or leveling up other engineers
Compensation & Benefits:

For US-based candidates, the target salary range for this role is 170,000 - $200,000 USD, plus equity. Final compensation is determined based on experience, skillset, scope of responsibility, interview performance, and geographic location. We’re committed to paying competitively and equitably.

For candidates based in Canada, compensation varies by province and will be shared by your recruiter early in the process.

Benefits

  • 100% covered health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (50% for dependents)
  • Generous PTO, including parental leave
  • 401(k)
  • Company laptop and home-office stipend
  • Bi-annual company retreats
  • Instrumentl is evolving rapidly. You’ll always have new challenges and opportunities to grow here.
What to expect:
