What does an instrument manager do?

An Instrument Manager oversees the acquisition, maintenance, calibration, and proper functioning of scientific instruments in laboratories or research facilities. They ensure that all equipment is operating correctly and meets regulatory standards. Instrument Managers also coordinate repairs, manage inventory, and train staff on equipment use. Their role is critical to ensuring accurate experimental results and compliance with safety protocols.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an instrument manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Instrument Manager, you need a strong background in instrumentation, calibration, and maintenance, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related technical field. Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and relevant certifications such as ISA Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) are typically required.
