Instructional System Designers focus on developing comprehensive instructional systems, often involving analysis, design, and implementation of complex training programs. Instructional Designers typically create educational content and courses, often in simpler formats. What does an instructional system designer do?

An Instructional System Designer (ISD) is responsible for analyzing learning needs and creating educational programs, courses, or training materials that effectively teach specific skills or knowledge. They use instructional design models, such as ADDIE, to develop, implement, and evaluate instructional materials for a variety of settings, including corporate, academic, and government environments. Their work often involves collaborating with subject matter experts, utilizing technology, and applying best practices in adult learning to ensure that learning objectives are met.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an instructional system designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Instructional System Designer, you need expertise in instructional design principles, curriculum development, and adult learning theories, typically supported by a degree in education, instructional design, or a related field. Familiarity with e-learning authoring tools (such as Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate), learning management systems (LMS), and sometimes relevant certifications like CPLP or ATD are important. Strong project management, communication, and collaboration skills help you work effectively with subject matter experts and stakeholders. These skills ensure the creation of engaging, effective learning experiences that meet organizational objectives and learner needs.

What are some common challenges instructional system designers face when collaborating with subject matter experts (SMEs)?

Instructional System Designers often work closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure course content is accurate and effective. A common challenge is translating complex or highly technical information from SMEs into clear, engaging learning materials suitable for the target audience. Effective communication, patience, and the ability to ask clarifying questions are essential for bridging the gap between content expertise and instructional design best practices. Building strong relationships and setting clear expectations early can help facilitate smoother collaboration and produce better learning outcomes.

Job description

This is an exciting time to be joining Delta Star!
We are Delta Star! The largest, American-owned medium power transformer manufacturer in the United States and the premier manufacturer of mobile transformers and mobile power substations in North America.
We are an industry-leader that has harnessed the power of electricity to reliably connect you to an essential part of modern-day life. Giving you the peace of mind you deserve to go out and make the world a better place!
Summary
At Delta Star, we believe training is more than information, it's transformation. We're looking for an Instructional Designer to create learning experiences that make an immediate and lasting impact on safety, performance, and craftsmanship. If you thrive on turning complex information into clear, engaging, and practical learning, this is the role where your skills will shine.
What You'll Do
As our Instructional Designer, you'll collaborate with subject matter experts, leaders, and safety teams to design training that meets real-world needs. You'll use adult learning principles to develop everything from eLearning modules and job aids to instructor-led training and on-the-job learning. You'll also measure the effectiveness of your work, making sure each program translates into improved performance across the organization.
A Day in the Life
Every day brings something different. One day you might be brainstorming with engineers on how to simplify a complex process, the next you're building an interactive eLearning module that helps technicians practice safely. You'll move fluidly between creative design, data-driven evaluation, and collaboration with teams across the company, always focused on one goal: building training that sticks and drives real results.
What We're Looking For
We need someone who can balance creativity with structure, ensuring training programs are both engaging and effective. The right candidate has strong instructional design expertise, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to design for diverse learners, from shop floor technicians to managers.
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Education, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, or related field (Master's preferred)
  • 3+ years of instructional design experience, ideally in manufacturing or industrial environments
  • Skilled in eLearning development tools and LMS platforms
  • Strong grasp of adult learning theory, instructional design models, and performance improvement strategies
  • Familiar with SCORM/xAPI standards and multimedia production
  • Professional certifications (ATD, Kirkpatrick) preferred

Why Join Us?
At Delta Star, your work will directly shape the knowledge, skills, and safety of our workforce. We offer competitive pay and a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, a 401(k) with company match, paid time off, floating holidays, and opportunities for professional growth.
If you're ready to design training that drives real change, we want to hear from you.
Pay Transparency
We are committed to fair and transparent pay practices. Compensation for this position will be determined within the posted salary range based on factors such as candidate qualifications, relevant experience, internal equity, market competitiveness, skills, and certifications. For union-represented roles, pay is established by the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
Other Duties
Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job. Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice.
