This position performs a variety of instructional design functions related to the planning, development, and delivery of courses. The position provides subject matter experts (SMEs) with course design support in creating effective and engaging learning environments informed by desired learning outcomes. The role involves consulting with individuals from diverse disciplines to identify course goals and apply evidence-based instructional strategies. A primary area of focus is the integration of innovative online and technology-enhanced course components to enhance learning across multiple delivery modalities. The position also provides pedagogical training, tutorials, tools, and templates to course developers on topics including online teaching, the Canvas learning management system, course design, and instructional technology integration. Additionally, the position researches emerging instructional design theories and educational technologies to support continuous improvement and innovation in teaching and learning.
This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement consisting of up to two remote workdays and three on-campus workdays per week, subject to operational needs and university policy.
Job Duties
Responsibility Area: Instructional Design Support Duties:
  • Collaborate with faculty/SME on the design of learning activities and authentic assessments that encourage critical thinking skills and student-centered online learning
  • Assist faculty/SME with constructing learning environments that address various learning styles and promote accessibility, interaction, social presence, student engagement, and community among students and between students and faculty.
  • Partner with faculty/SME to evaluate course design using a rubric, provide feedback to support continuous improvement, and implement feedback to revise courses.
  • Collaborates with academic technology experts to recommend appropriate use of technology that meets instructional objectives. Collaborates with subject matter experts, team members, academic technologists, and others to provide support services for instructional, technological and institutional challenges related to digital learning.
  • Research new technologies and participate in professional development to keep current with rapid changes in technology, course design, and higher education.
  • Work with faculty/SME to develop templates for course design.
  • Design and storyboard interactive learning activities, selecting video material, assisting in media production by coaching and script editing.

Assist with creating and conducting faculty development programming, series, workshops and training in a variety of formats centered around teaching with technology.

  • Use project management systems to monitor, update, and report on the status of ongoing projects.
  • Ensure comprehensive support to team members and partners, including timely communication over email, in project management software, and in person
  • Provide exceptional support to various stakeholders in the instructional design process (including, but not limited to, graduate assistants, faculty, and staff) as they create and maintain online course materials
  • Collaborate with instructional design team members to maintain consistent quality of courses across UNO
  • Implement strategic initiatives from ILCI Division (and other campus partners, as appropriate).
  • Collaborate with academic technology experts to recommend solutions.
  • Participate in strategic planning and decision-making related to online and blended learning.
  • Assist with instructional design projects
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by supervisor.

Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in instructional design, educational technology, or related academic discipline.
  • Training in instructional design, educational technology or related field.
Required Experience
  • 3+ years of experience working with faculty in the development and delivery of online courses, and/or teaching an online course.
  • 1+ years experience in Higher Education
  • Experience with Canvas Learning Management System
  • Experience with Microsoft Office tools including Teams, SharePoint, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Experience with video editing software (e.g., Camtasia or Adobe Premiere Pro)
  • Experience taking and/or teaching an online course
  • Experience implementing systematic instructional design processes for online learning environments
  • Experience with Open SUNY Course Quality Review Rubric (OSCQR) and/or other quality assurance frameworks (e.g., Quality Matters)
  • Experience with project-based learning, adaptive learning, microcredentialing and/or gamification
  • Experience with HTML, CSS, video editing, graphic design and/or web design principles
