What is an installation engineer?

An installation engineer sets up and establishes computer systems or equipment for an organization. The job duties for installation engineers vary, depending on the industry of your employer. For example, positions that set up wide-scale computer networks require IT experience. Manufacturing firms need installation engineers familiar with the workings of industrial equipment and machinery. Installation engineers are also responsible for troubleshooting problems with the systems and may provide customer service to the client when issues arise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an installation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Installation Engineer, you need strong technical knowledge in engineering principles, practical experience with installations, and typically a relevant degree or technical certification. Familiarity with CAD software, PLC programming, and various diagnostic tools is commonly required, along with certifications such as CompTIA or manufacturer-specific credentials. Excellent problem-solving skills, effective communication, and a customer-oriented mindset help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure that complex systems are installed correctly, efficiently, and safely, minimizing downtime and maximizing client satisfaction.

What are the typical challenges installation engineers face when working on-site, and how can they be managed?

Installation Engineers often encounter challenges such as unexpected technical issues, varying site conditions, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders on-site. Effective communication and thorough pre-installation planning are key to managing these challenges. Engineers should also be adaptable, ready to troubleshoot unforeseen problems, and work collaboratively with client representatives, contractors, and other team members to ensure smooth project execution.

Job description

Location: Chicago / Elgin, Illinois | Travel: 90%

Your primary mission: install and commission Xeikon digital printing systems at customer sites. When the installation schedule is lighter, you will support the local service team with maintenance and troubleshooting.

About the role

Xeikon is looking for an Installation Engineer to join our North America Service team. Based in the Chicago / Elgin area, you will travel to customer sites throughout North America and take ownership of new dry-toner press installations from preparation through successful production start-up.

After comprehensive technical training, you will represent Xeikon Headquarters on site, coordinate closely with customers and internal experts, and ensure each system meets our standards for print quality, reliability, safety, and customer satisfaction.

Installation work has priority. During periods with fewer installations, you will assist the local service organization with preventive and corrective maintenance, diagnostics, and technical customer support.

What you will do

Installation and commissioning - primary responsibility

  • Plan and execute the installation and commissioning of Xeikon digital printing engines at customer sites across North America.
  • Confirm site readiness and coordinate the installation plan with customers, logistics, local service colleagues, and technical specialists.
  • Assemble, connect, configure, calibrate, and test mechanical, electrical, and software components.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues during start-up, working with second-line experts when escalation is required.
  • Optimize system performance and print quality, complete acceptance checks, and provide a clear technical handover to the customer.
  • Document installation activities, technical findings, actions, and customer feedback accurately and on time.

Local service support - secondary responsibility

  • Support the local service team when installation activity is lower or no installation is scheduled.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance to keep customer equipment reliable and productive.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and software-related problems and drive issues toward resolution.
  • Act as a trusted technical advisor who helps customers get the best performance from their Xeikon systems.
What you bring
  • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Electronics, Mechatronics, or a related technical field.
  • At least two years of experience in field service, equipment installation, equipment maintenance, or industrial printing is preferred.
  • Strong hands-on troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, and software systems.
  • The ability to learn complex technology quickly, analyze root causes, and translate findings into practical solutions.
  • A self-directed, organized, and communicative working style, with the confidence to take ownership at customer sites.
  • A safety-conscious, accountable, and flexible approach, with the ability to collaborate across local and global teams.
  • Willingness and ability to travel 75-90% within the United States and occasionally internationally.
  • A valid driver's license and passport.
Why join Xeikon
  • Join a global digital printing technology leader and receive extensive technical training and ongoing professional development.
  • Work on varied, technically challenging projects with experienced local and international colleagues.
  • Benefit from a competitive salary, benefits, and career opportunities within Flint Group.
About Xeikon
