Job description

Position Purpose
Position is responsible for keeping the building in clean and orderly condition, performing routine maintenance activities, notifying supervisor of needed repairs. Keep premises neatly groomed and safe by cleaning debris, snow, etc., from sidewalks.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Inspire Development Centers provides Early Childhood Education (ECE) and social services to more than 4000 children, in center based and home based setting, at more than 27 Child Development Centers (CDC) throughout the State of Washington. Inspire provides services under various federal and state funded programs with differing regulations and stipulations, which must be coordinated and adhered to, including, but not limited to: Regional Head Start (RHS), Migrant Seasonal Head Start (MSHS), Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) and Early Head Start (EHS). The agency is required to meet an annual quota of non-federal share (in-kind) funds. A large majority of children's first language is Spanish.
Supervisory and Other Relationships
Custodian reports to the Center Manager, and works closely with the center staff, and with around children.
Examples of Essential Duties and Accountabilities
The following examples of duties and accountabilities illustrate the general range of tasks assigned to the position but are not intended to define the limits of required duties. Other essential duties may be assigned consistent with the general scope of the position.
1. Responsible to sweep, vacuum, mop, dust, clean, and disinfect classrooms sinks, restrooms, and common areas. Responsible to dispose of all garbage and disinfect wastebaskets or garbage cans daily. Keep outside equipment clean and in good/safe working conditions, (i.e. lawn mowers, shop vacuums, extractor, etc.). Strip, wax, and polish floors and shampoo carpets according to center schedule.
2. Responsible to keep sidewalks, parking lot, and playground areas safe from hazard. Responsible that all doors and windows are securely locked before closing center. Discuss unique concerns of facility and immediately report any unsafe equipment to Safety Committee Chair person and Center Manager.
3. Responsible to replace outside light bulbs, exit lights, broken gutters, washing windows, minor exterior center repairs, plumbing, and painting. Check and change furnace filters as needed. Lawn maintenance as needed during growing season. To include cutting lawn, watering, weed control, and center landscaping.
4. Be familiar with Hazardous Materials Program and ensure that all chemicals, and cleaning supplies and materials are stored and locked in a childproof cabinet or storeroom.
5. Responsible to prepare and maintaining inventories of janitorial supplies, reporting and requesting to the Center Manager, those that need to be purchased.
6. Assist the head cook and/or cook in storing and dating groceries.
7. Shows interest in furthering professional growth by attending staff meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars.
8. Maintains confidentiality of program and client related information at all times.
9. Perform all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Incumbents are required to demonstrate knowledge and abilities in these areas:
โ€ข General Educational Development (GED) certificate, or obtain within the first year of employment;
โ€ข Extensive knowledge in building maintenance and custodial practices;
โ€ข Experience in planning and facilitating workloads;
โ€ข Experience in policy and procedure processes;
โ€ข Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
โ€ข Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills;
โ€ข Experience in custodial and maintenance risk management;
โ€ข Must be able to understand and follow written and oral instructions and procedures without constant supervision;
โ€ข Understanding of the interrelationships between services and systems;
โ€ข Must be able to work independently and efficiently;
โ€ข Ability to read, write, and communicate in English and/or Spanish to fulfill the responsibilities of this position;
โ€ข Ability to move equipment and materials within and between units.
โ€ข Ability to learn new tasks quickly and efficiently;
โ€ข Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines;
โ€ข Ability to gather data for reports;
โ€ข Strong customer service focus;
โ€ข Ability to work with culturally diverse population;
โ€ข Documentation and recordkeeping skills.
These skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of training and/or education in related field, and previous experience in custodial and building maintenance. The combination of education, training, and experience will provide the competence skills to perform the work of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
โ€ข High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
โ€ข English/Spanish bi-lingual fluency;
โ€ข High Standards of work ethics - cleanliness and sanitation
Position Requirements
Incumbents are required to have the following:
โ€ข Must be at least 18 years of age;
โ€ข Valid Washington State driver's license;
โ€ข Proof of automobile insurance;
โ€ข Ability to travel to perform job duties and responsibilities;
โ€ข Must pass initial and periodic criminal and background check;
โ€ข Must pass initial and periodic Department of Early Learning (DEL) background check;
โ€ข Must pass initial and periodic employee health clearance; (present it within forty-five (45) days of employment);
โ€ข Current Food Handler card; (obtain the training within thirty (30) days of employment);
โ€ข Current First Aid / CPR cards, (obtain the training within thirty (30) days of employment);
โ€ข Subject to initial and periodic TB screen;
โ€ข Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV / AIDS) training, (obtain the training within thirty (30) days of employment);
โ€ข Blood Borne Pathogen training, (obtain the training within thirty (30) days of employment);
โ€ข Subject to random drug screen;
โ€ข Must sign a Confidentiality Agreement; and
โ€ข Must complete and sign a Conflict of Interest Disclosure Statement on an annual basis.
