Miami Valley Materials Testing Center, an A2LA accredited laboratory and Family Company of Applied Technical Services, is expressly designed to offer comprehensive single-source testing, analysis, and consultation services for automotive, aerospace, medical, as well as other various industries. MVMTC provides a one-stop resource for companies looking for timely and accurate materials testing and analysis

Position Summary:

The Senior Metallurgist will conduct tests related to the structure and properties (physical, mechanical, and chemical) of materials to address the needs of a wide variety of clients.ย  He/she will use various techniques and methodologies including optical and electron microscopes.ย  The Senior Metallurgist will also conduct failure analysis of metallic and nonmetallic materials to identify the failure mechanism, contributing factors, cause of failure, and preventative actions.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform tests and failure analysis with full data gathering, interpretation, and report writing

  • Work on projects with high complexity and independently design test protocols for failure analyses and materials problem solving

  • Develop test procedures to determine interaction between different materials and different environments

  • Consistently identify failure mechanism, contributing factors, causes, and preventative actions

  • Provide oversight and training to other team members, contributing to the growth of technical expertise and capability in the laboratory

  • Manage projects for complex and non-routine metallurgy, interdepartmental, and failure analysis jobs

  • Review of metallurgy and failure analysis reports

  • Consult with customers to identify testing needs, answer technical questions, and provide status updates; assist in quoting projects as needed

  • Consult with engineers in other divisions of the company including forensics, mechanical engineering, chemistry, and dimensional inspection

  • Assist with safety and quality audits

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Metallurgy, Engineering, or Physical/Materials Science

  • 7-10 years of related experience; experience in a material testing laboratory environment preferred

  • Experience consulting with customers to identify needs and address technical questions

  • Advanced level of technical acumen with industry knowledge in specific areas

  • Ability to work independently to design test protocols and manage complex projects

  • High-level critical thinking skills with the ability to identify and solve problems and anticipate future trends and challenges

  • Ability to make decisions and communicate them persuasively based on technical expertise

  • Process improvement oriented with a focus on operating with efficiency and quality

  • Good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to operate across other internal departments or functions

  • Working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), maintain Lab ISO and process Safety procedure
