Description of Job
The Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) position is a General Maintenance Electrician Supervisor for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC), at the Sterling Correctional Facility. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to: Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to: ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; training and overseeing inmate workers in general maintenance and electrical skills and procedures and ensuring the safe, efficient and compliant completion of assigned building, and grounds maintenance tasks. The General Maintenance Electrician Supervisor promotes the CDOC Mission, Vision, and Values, with integrity and commitment.
Safety and Security - position maintains safety and security of facility and work sites; through clear and accurate communication trains and guides inmates in all aspects of electrical operations, the proper use and care of controlled items, tools, equipment, and chemicals; enforces security procedures by conducting work site searches and monitoring workplace environment and inmate behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity, or potential problems; initiates verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically controls inmates with the proper application of restraints or "use of force" techniques; monitors, supervises, and escorts inmates according to policy and limits inmate access to restricted areas; position performs inmate counts and transportation; responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to policy and writes and submits required reporting. Through conscientious observation, clear communications and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations, facility Implementation Adjustments and the Code of Penal Discipline, position promotes a safe and secure environment.
Operations - position ensures the safe, secure, efficient, compliant, and cost effective execution of assigned tasks and projects by performing "hands on" instructional work alongside inmate crew. Position is responsible for facility electrical systems and electronic devices.
Building Maintenance - position is responsible for the maintenance of facility buildings to include electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting, remodeling and repairs; provides instruction and training to inmates in modifying and remodeling of prison buildings that are constructed of various materials (which may include steel, rock, brick, masonry, wood, plaster and pre-stressed concrete); provides training in the design, installation and repair & maintenance of all facility structures; trains inmate workers in the proper use, care and accountability of applicable tools, equipment, chemicals and machinery to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient completion of projects. Evaluate the condition of electrical fixtures/systems and safely and skillfully perform corrective, preventative and predictive maintenance. Ensure assigned work is performed in compliance with agency regulations and policy, as well as applicable local, state, and federal guidelines and codes.
Grounds Maintenance - position is responsible for the maintenance of facility grounds to include design, installation and daily maintenance and repair of irrigation pumps, sprinkler heads and lines, pipelines, valves, supply ditches and gates; provides instruction and training to inmates in all aspects of grounds maintenance and the proper use, care and accountability of applicable tools, equipment, chemicals and machinery to ensure safe, effective, and efficient completion of projects. Position is responsible for snow removal throughout complex.
The General Maintenance Electrician Supervisor coordinates with other projects, supervisors and managers in order to facilitate the most economical use of resources and assists other physical plant staff with duties as assigned. With prior purchase/approval and in accordance with fiscal rules and policies, position maintains adequate inventory of supplies and materials for daily and emergent needs; monitors inventory levels and implements procedures for efficient use and elimination of theft, waste, and loss. This position troubleshoots and repairs electrical devices based on information received from staff in that area.
Supervision - provides supervision of assigned inmate work crew; promotes a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission and vision. Trains and instructs staff and inmates in the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment and procedures to ensure efficient, safe and effective completion of assigned tasks; stresses safe construction practices and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for self, staff, and inmates; exemplifies a professional workforce that embodies honesty, integrity, and ethical behavior.
Participates in inmate hiring process in order to ensure appropriate placement on crews and training needs; tracks and calculates inmate hours and pay, creates schedule and assigns tasks and resolves informal grievances; inspects work and performs inmate evaluations; reduces inmate idleness and creates real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community reentry.
Position may be required to supervise additional inmate crews in the absence of other supervisors. Position may be assigned to assist other trades supervisors and crews.
This position is subject to the following:
Facility call back, working additional hours, or shifts to maintain security and operations, working outside during inclement weather, working in close proximity to industrial equipment, and in high, tight, and confined spaces.

Minimum Qualifications:
Licensure - It is required to obtain a Journeyman Electrician License or Master Electrician License with the State of Colorado within one (1) year of hire.
Experience must be clearly described within the work history and job duties section of your application to meet this requirement. Please note that any work experience less than full time will be prorated.
Four (4) years of employment experience in building/equipment maintenance or a combination of building and grounds maintenance. Two of the four years must include electrical work experience in residential and/or commercial buildings.
Building/Equipment Maintenance - includes planning, estimating and performing a variety of "hands on" trades such as carpentry, plumbing, welding, machinery/equipment repair and/or electrical on residential, commercial, or agricultural structures.
Grounds Maintenance - includes planning, installation and/or maintenance of automated irrigation systems, comprehensive lawn care and a variety of other exterior work such as concrete work, asphalt patching, fence building, and/or snow removal.ORApplicant may meet the four (4) year requirement with a combination of work experience as follows:
A minimum of two (2) years of electrical employment experience may be combined with correctional experience.
Correctional Experience - must be security related duties where primary responsibilities included detaining, controlling movement and escorting inmates in a prison facility; conducting counts and searches while monitoring inmate assignments and movement throughout the day.
Substitutions:
Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or degree through an accredited, non- correspondence vocational or trade school that resulted in demonstrated competencies equivalent to those learned through the required experience may substitute for experience on a year for year basis. Please attach transcripts if you are using this substitution. Transcripts must include the name of the institution, your student ID #, a listing of the course curriculum, the degree earned and the date awarded.

• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively cooperate with other staff and inmates and inspire teamwork.
• Willingness and ability to train, coach and mentor inmate workers in order to prepare them for community reentry.
• Ability to effectively respond to emergency situations (such as fights, fires, medical emergencies and escapes)
• Ability to climb ladders and stairs, work in high, tight and confined spaces; outside during inclement weather and in close proximity to industrial equipment.
