Compensation

The anticipated base pay compensation range for this position is $134,100.00$223,500.00. This role is eligible for an incentive target of up to 15 % or $ , based on the achievement of individual and company performance objectives in accordance with the current terms of the incentive program which are subject to change.

Grainger is looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer to help scale our Platform Product team. You will solve real business problems with automation, self-service, and opinionated defaults that reduce risk without slowing delivery.  You will also identify and drive opportunities that help teams adopt good cloud practices.  

You will report to the Manager of Platform Engineering. 

PLEASE NOTE: Visa Sponsorship (first time sponsorship or transfer) is NOT Available for this role at this time.

You Will:

  • Design, build and evolve automated capabilities that are self-service, efficient, and dependable and can be leveraged company-wide across engineering teams. 

  • Pick up new technologies, languages and frameworks quickly, apply them to your daily work, and share learnings to upskill the team. 

  • Work independently on ambiguous problems, drive designs to decisions, and mentor other engineers through code reviews, pairing, and technical talks. 

  • Continuously identify and reduce technical debt that increases risk or developer friction. 

  • Collaborate with your Engineering Manager and provide feedback on product roadmaps and backlog priorities. 

  • Coordinate with Product Engineering to design solutions that automate cloud processes across the SDLC. 

  • Suggest secure defaults and advise on clean coding practices, pipeline test coverage, and observability/alerting. 

  • Participate in standups, desk checks, tech huddles, and story grooming meetings to provide guidance where it moves the work forward. 

  • Record decisions, context, and outcomes related to design choices, and prepare Architecture Decision Records (ADRs). 

  • AI first mindset and contribute with AI ways of working. 

You Have:

  • Bachelor’s Or Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science or Information Technology, or equivalent experience. 

  • 5 years of experience in software engineering, architecture, administration, observability in a large and distributed environment working across multiple teams. 

  • Knowledge of cloud native event-driven microservices-based architectures, including operational concerns such as performance, resiliency, observability, monitoring, service discovery, and routing. 

  • 3 years as a full stack engineer building and operating services in production, including modern web frontends with React or a similar framework. 

  • 3 years coding in higher-level languages such as Python or Java in a multi-team codebase. 

  • Experience implementing cloud native solutions that integrate smoothly into teams’ development lifecycles, with measurable improvement to developer experience. 

  • Experience deploying organization-wide secrets as a service and integrating with pipelines and runtime applications. 

  • Strong knowledge of containers and Kubernetes, APIs, and web services, including building services with FastAPI or similar frameworks. 

  • Cloud experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure via UI, API, and CLI or automation 

  • Experience implementing infrastructure as code, such as Terraform and automation via API or CLI. 

  • Experience in leading architecture design and solutioning of green field and brown field projects. 

  • Experience with CI/CD principles and the ability to diagnose and improve pipeline issues. 

  • Familiarity with common DevOps tools such as Ansible, Jenkins, or GitHub, and similar. 

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to mentor, influence, and collaborate across teams. 

  • AWS solutions Architect certification is preferred.
